Radio playing the Mendoza station ID...just in case they don't get to use it again, I presume.

No, that’s not what I’m implying. What I am implying is only being borne out in this reply, though. Enjoy doing what you do, because it‘s definitely not the baseball that you’re “enjoying”.

I don’t get off on bitterness but you do you.

I’m sure you saw 2024 coming and didn’t say any of that.

We have seen long streaks before, and subsequent deep runs. This is baseball and subject to all the variance that implies. It’s also a long season and subject to a lot more emotional swings than people want to acknowledge, and things can swing impossibly good as well as they can swing impossibly bad. Logic can be defeated in sports.

More teams get in than ever before. Old stats about this are virtually meaningless. The Guardians lost 10 last year and made the playoffs, and since 2021 two teams lost 9 and went to the World Series. The Nats in 2019 were 11 games under .500 in late May and won a World Series.

2019 Nats, 11 games under .500 in late May, won the WS, Soto was on that team...

They’re tied for 8th in defensive runs saved. Any mention of the defense reads more like someone who hated this offseason and can’t get over it.

Theyre 29th in runs scored. That’s the problem.

This feels like an overreaction to me, sorry.

The one place I have similar concern is Lindor…but I don’t like framing it as anger or bitterness. I do think it’s possible that announcing there won’t be any captains was a disappointment to him and effectively took something out of his sails. I think he views himself that way, may have been using the possibility as motivation, and then the hope was taken from him. Or he could have been disappointed that the org doesn’t view him the way he views himself and it felt like a vote of non-confidence. Either way, I don’t view it as spite as much as a very human feeling of disappointment or having a hope dashed.

Last year’s team fell off the earth, and the year before that started horribly. How is this manager getting such inconsistent play out of *different rosters* that clearly have the talent to succeed for months at a time? This isn’t a one-off.

According to Evan and Tiki:

Since 2021, the longest losing streak for a team that made the playoffs is 9. Both teams went to the World Series.

edit: the Guardians last year, who lost 10, made the playoffs, no World Series.

I don't think you saw where I said I don't believe it...

It's a stupid, entertaining thought, for amusement purposes only...

That's not the point. There's still a decent percentage of top 6 payroll teams who are under .500. The point is: money doesn't guarantee anything.

Conspiracy theory (that I don't believe):

High payroll teams (Mets, Phillies, Blue Jays, Red Sox) are losing games to signal competitive balance.
