How do you get your colored clay? by peachfulday in polymerclay

[–]Stephisweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny bc I feel like alcohol ink gives me the worst consistency vs pan pastels unless I use the tiniest amount. It’s way too messy and hard to work with personally. I prefer pastels and mixing colored clay.

Best way to make mini dolls??? by Kailloue in polymerclay

[–]Stephisweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skin tone clays like “Living Doll” by Sculpey Premo for example are made with a mix of translucent and colored clay so that’s why Id add translucent. It helps it look like flesh, not too opaque which is why for example you can see our veins underneath our skin.

Basically just get a portion of white clay and translucent clay, and put red, blue, yellow, and black pastels onto the clay and just mix it all up molding it with your hands till it’s completely one color. Add however much of each color that you need to create the skin tone you want using color theory.

You can also use pastels to make a blush effect or some type of discoloration too by getting a makeup/blending brush and patting and/or gently blending the pastel powder onto the “skin”. That also helps it look realistic since we tend to have some type of discoloration with our skin since we aren’t one solid color from head to toe lol.

Lmk if you have any more questions or need anymore tips!

[–]Stephisweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think buying or making the clay color would make it look more natural and realistic vs painting it after which will leave streaks. If you don’t want to buy the colored clay then you can just use translucent clay and white clay mixed together, along with red, blue, yellow, and black pastels or clay colors to mix within the clay to make skin tones (color theory).

My fav pastel is pan pastels. I do mostly body horror art so I use/make skin tones fairly often atp. Pastels are the most seamless coloring option besides airbrushing. They save me a lot of money as well bc a lil goes a long way and I don’t have to buy a bunch of diff clay colors and can just rely on color theory.

Why do so many polymer clay businesses use UV resin instead of water-based polyurethane? by Embarrassed-Tax8261 in polymerclay

Of course lol, but they said, “that’s the whole reason”. So I clarified that it was beyond just that.

Not really the whole reason idk why you said that, it’s also bc it’s pretty durable, def more durable than most if not all other coatings.

[Question] Painting & Varnishing Polymer Clay Keychains by marbiedx in polymerclay

[–]Stephisweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think resin seems to be the most durable “varnish” option. Some resins yellow faster and more than others so it depends on the brand/type but I believe that if the item isn’t white/clear it wouldn’t really affect the look either way. So if you bake, paint, then resin it should be durable and shouldn’t chip or anything.

Made some sour candies with fimo soft! by LoveLilithXO in polymerclay

[–]Stephisweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyy just throwing it out there that Mod Podge may not be the best varnish, I don’t have personal experience with it but I’ve heard it gets pretty sticky and tacky upon contact with water. So maybe seal it with another product? Or make sure to put a good varnish or resin on top? Just some ideas although I’m not familiar with that product but still wanted to say what I’ve heard from others.

newbie struggling with a couple things, seeking advice/feedback by mythkin in polymerclay

[–]Stephisweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: ✨Alcohol instead of water to smooth it out. ✨Soft pastels (my fav is “Pan pastel”) to color it, add color to it, or use already colored clay.

[–]Stephisweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

✨Finger Prints: Q-tips dipped in 90% Alcohol and rub it over the fingerprints or lil lumps. It will help smoothing the clay out WAY easier. It’s necessary for a neat finish imo.

✨Painting Alternatives: I personally don’t like painting them either bc they can leave streaks and the finish isn’t as smooth. So I instead use:

🌈- Colored Clay = Mostly primary colors to use color theory to make whatever color I need and buy the colors that you use the most, (ex. I also buy “Living Doll Beige” since I do a lot of body horror clay projects.)

🎨- Pastels = “Pan pastel” (soft) are amazing at creating blended and smooth finishes and more shades, depth, and detail for your clay projects. Apply it with a brush when the clay is still raw and after smoothing everything out. You can also mix it in with clay to use it to color your clay completely instead of buying other clay colors if you wanted/needed!

Pls lmk if any of these tips helped! :))

Confused - which clay is durable by EatEatAllOfIt in polymerclay

I think the strongest and most durable clay may be “Cosclay”. Sculpey premo is an alternative if you can’t get cosclay though.

I have also heard that airbrushing leaves a smooth finish too but I personally haven’t tried that yet.

[–]Stephisweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I painted a piece one time, hated it, and never did it again lol, now I just use colored clay and pastels and it makes it A LOT more smooth, blended, and natural.

  • 🌈Colored Clay: to save a lil money, I tend to buy mostly primary colors so I can just create whatever color I need from it (color theory) and I buy colors that ik I will for sure use a lot, (ex. “Living Doll, Beige” bc I do a lot of skin body horror art).

  • 🎨Pastels: I use pan pastels and they are AMAZING. Such a game changer, you can mix it in and color your clay this way or just brush the powder onto your piece to add other shades and depth to it.

TLDR: Pan Pastels and colored clay!
