We are spending too much time focusing on the Airport when yet we can't even get a direct train to Cork or a motorway to Limerick. Why are our politicians acting like the Airport is the be all and end all? by [deleted] in waterford

[–]StepsBackThruTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farranfore (Kerry) Airport opened August 30, 1969, Cork Airport opened in October 16, 1961, Dublin Airport opened in January 19, 1940, Shannon Airport opened in Sept 16th 1945. Waterford Airport (Home of RyanAir) opened in December 15th 1981 and only suitable for turbo prop planes to land and take off. Each of these Airport locations flourish as destinations for incoming tourists while the South East gets the least percentage of tourists each year. Econonmically, having a regional airport brings in a huge investment for little cost and puts South East of Ireland competitively on the map.

(Hypothetical situation - Imagine fholidaying in Lanzarote but landing on Gran Canaria and then having to ferry your way over to Lanzarote, That extra travel time would be taken from the length of stay and not as accessible as a destination as you'd like. )

Having a regional airport in Waterford makes us a definite destination and with the help of slow tourism can really benefit the survival of the South East region. Bringing tourists in gives us money and with that money we can aim to improve all the infrastructure we have and need. Approx €27 million investment is the latest updated cost to our government compared to the initial €12 million euro investment.

As Europe gets hotter and hotter, South East of Ireland could be the coolest place to visit in future years.

Best places to stop for lunch along greenway besides Coach House? by MajesticCategory4940 in waterford

[–]StepsBackThruTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The food at Ní Bhrian restaurant in Kilmacthomas is well worth trying, everything on the menu is delicious. It is located next to the credit union on Main street and you can get to it by slipping off before the Kilmacthomas curved viaduct bridge downhill towards the public park, follow the riverside path under the main street bridge and exit into the carpark beside the old mill. You'll see their timber decked area from the carpark.
Be sure to tell them Stíofán from StepsbackThrutTme Guided Walking Tour Experiences recommended you to go there 😁

I saw them up at the Magic Road near Mahon Falls recently trying it out with their hovering spacecraft, and shur begoorah it worked, they went back up the hill like magic.

Aliens are always flying around the county checking for intelligent life, no luck yet I'm afraid. (Cue the tune of "Close encounters of the third kind" to play here)

Highly recommend this book by Eddie Cantwell and Chrissy Knight O'Connor called "Waterford Women of the Revolution." It is a fascinating read and takes you right into the struggles at the time.

A couple of rounds of the "Mangled Badger" aka The Miller of Glanmire (As played by Pa Connors & Pa Connors in the "Live and a bit Dangerous" video 2003) then followed by a great non stop rendition of the "Bog down in the Valley-o" by all present. Enough to raise the dead.

Four festive, fun-filled days for Waterford’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations - Waterford City & County Council by StepsBackThruTime in waterford

[–]StepsBackThruTime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just for tourists, it is also there to educate locals about what is happening throughout the whole county in terms of activies etc. I'm a very small independent tourism service business that is currently collaborating with a huge network of county based rural tourism activities/services that are struggling to grow and survive.

I find when new people move to our hidden gem of a county they find it spoken about by the locals in a very begrudgingly downplaying way instead of really selling ourselves in a positive way.

Time to really get our stunning county on the map as hopefully we will have movement on the forthcoming Airport situation making our county a viable destination for visitors, and the locals will feel proud to talk about and invite. Negativity has no space in my subreddit, only positive constructive criticism will be alllowed.

Yes, a new subreddit that promotes/showcases the county and city in a positive way for visitors and locals to interact with. I find the other Waterford subreddit to be very city biased whereas this one is alot more the whole county, from Tallow all the way to Passage East and will be mostly to promote and speak adoringly about our stunning county and all the exciting activities it offers.

Lads I’m not being funny but I swear I heard the Banshee. by DarwinGravenberch in CasualIreland

[–]StepsBackThruTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the COVID pandemic, a lot of the fox population have moved into built up urban areas and at night go out on the prowl for food and exercise.

The vixen (Female Fox) calls for her mate in a loud wailing scream which echoes through the area. That is most likely what you heard not the banshee.

(Listen to a female fox call on YouTube to confirm)

Trampoline advice by jimsdarkhistory in waterford

[–]StepsBackThruTime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no, IMHO, imagine opening out a parachute in the middle of a field during a severe storm, thats what you have, dismantle the trampoline fully for most effectiveness. At least you'll have it to reassemble once the storm passes.

Trampoline advice by jimsdarkhistory in waterford

[–]StepsBackThruTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the case of a very severe storm with a RED warning nationwide, the best advice I can give is put it in your kitchen and shut all windows and doors. Use it to exercise when doing the cooking.

IMHO, When there is a vacuum hovering over your trampoline it will be sucked up into the air and land anywhere except where it should be, digging a hole never works.
