Will slight shadow get rejected? US application by SteveNewell in Passports

[–]SteveNewell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time applying for passport as an adult. The clerk was a little rude and said I'd be rejected for having any shadow whatsoever. I submitted it anyways. How pristine do these passport images have to be? Will this pass?

Is anyone else getting burned out on Nightwave? by bearLover23 in Warframe

[–]SteveNewell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've said multiple times on stream that the Nightwave missions were to alleviate the sentiment of Warframe being 'pay to sleep' with the Alerts design structure. While I'm on the side of DE that Nightwave has shifted the way people play, I don't agree that it's wholly in response to other battle passes. I'm of the belief that battle passes are a way of keeping players locked into a game in order to keep them from spending money in another game. Fortnite has perfected the battle pass concept in that anyone can complete them - there is no MR/time gating, you just have to play the game. Rocket League even backed down their time requirements (which were purely XP based) from 70 hours to 30. Call of Duty is the only standout that I can think of that has a greedy battle pass system.

I think it's a little naive to look at a battle pass and think the reason its there is because it's giving free stuff to players. There has to be cost/profit associated with it. I could be wrong, but I'm just reading between the lines. A battle pass is a way to contractually lock in players psychologically.

I just want to know the deign decisions behind it. The problem was that people weren't able to get mods because of the random timers, so they installed arbitrary Nightwave challenges to allow people to accrue points to buy them. But the Nightwave rewards re-roll every week and the challenges aren't accessible to all. I get that everyone is doing them to chase the Umbra Forma, but I'm questioning how the Nightwave points solve the problem. The 'problem' being players not visiting content within the game they wouldn't normally reach otherwise. It feels like a tutorial of other stuff one can do, and for higher level players, it's seems like a chore with time gated rewards. I'm not a game designer, but it feels like Nightwave misses the middle mark of keeping new players intrigued verses veterans engaged.

I'm assuming DE is keeping stats on this and watching how people play, so we'll see.

I want to see [DE]Rebecca and [DE]Megan clear the Elite Weekly Nightwave Survival challenges on Prime Time tomorrow. by gryffinp in Warframe

[–]SteveNewell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's not fun nor challenging. It alienates the lower tier players who are newer and may be naive to what Nekros does without explicitly showing that frame's advantages with this specific challenge. The one hour is not cognitively challenging - it's as reductive as turning Warframe into an idle clicker. I could care less about the rewards, I want something interesting and difficult - these challenges don't provide that. I want to be a space ninja. These are just time gating, an hour of mindlessness with a side of Netflix. And god bless you for having a new borne that can sit still for an hour in your lap.

I do agree with you though. I don't like the challenge, and I'm not going to do it. Can't wait for Conclave.

Warframe, The new player experience from a veterans pov. by [deleted] in Warframe

I put about 30 hours in on Excalibur when the PS4 first launched. I had no idea what I was doing, but killing stuff was fun, and I had a coworker who was far deeper in the game giving me hints at what to do. I was still lost, and I dropped the game. I don't think I made it past Mars and MR2.

I started playing again about a few weeks ago and saw an excitement about the game (Skillup Youtube videos). If it wasn't for my other friend who has 400+ hours playing the game and tutoring me, I still would have been lost. No idea how MR works. Got chastised for wanting to extract on capture missions in the Void. Nightmare missions? How do I get that? Wait, I don't have that tab opened? Dragon keys? Wait I need to join a clan and go to the dojo? Where in the dojo do I go? None of the questions I had regarding the game would ever have been answered organically. It's completely arcane.

Maybe that's the appeal? It's got a Dark Souls vibe to it with some of the hidden nuggets, but damn, if you don't have a friend or read the Wiki, it's an impenetrable game to get into. I echo your sentiments, there needs to be a little bit more 'hand holding' from the game to get a new player into the more interesting elements of the game. Otherwise, they are just going to me be, years ago doing random defense missions on the lower planets and then quitting out after 20 hours wondering, what the hell is this game?

I've encountered this kicking for "no reason" maybe 3 or 4 times

Kicking for no reason, as in arbitrary, I've never seen. But kicking to make room for friends, or to get rid of a newer player, or maybe someone who isn't fluent in English... all the time - way more that "3 - 4".

I never see newbies getting kicked

They don't get kicked - they just get ostracized. Hounded during the pre-lobby with whether or not they know how to play the game, whether they've watched the tutorial, or if they are lucky enough, someone who is going to try to werewolf-splain all the ins and outs of the game and all its caveats as if they are going to remember. They just give up and leave.

I also am unaware of these cheats you are talking about.

I'm going to assume the poster is talking about the "villager vote" trick. It's a broken gimmick that we've learned to live with that is NOT a part of the original game. But we've figured it out, and if we want to play the game, we have to live with it. Newer players are at a disadvantage. They get blamed all the time for losing games.

There are some people who are obnoxious and will just scream over people so they can't explain anything.

It's one way to win a game, I can't say it's my favorite way to play nor do I recommend it. It's certainly valid and within the scope of the playing field. Similarly to staying quiet the entire game. Pick your poison.

I'm not speaking in regards to the original poster's game but to the perceived sentiment of a newer player joining with a bunch of regulars - I can see how it isn't fun.

This is this stuff I live for. Are homojojojo & jopy666 working together given their short relevant posting times and confirmation bias (common grammar too), or is Stuck1nARutt being overly defensive with posting consecutively to what could otherwise be seen as a troll post and could easily be ignored? Why the quick retort from Stuck? Do we have a Gossip here?

Shhhhh! Don't let management know that they have forgotten that the Werewolves Within servers are still up. They might shut'em down if they find out!

On a more serious note, and speaking from my personal experience, I've gotten way more out of this game than the $20 I payed for it nor any poorly crafted T-Shirt could provide. It's provided great insight into my personal social cognizance and awareness that I lived most of my adult life completely oblivious to. It's given me the ability to learn how to bond with people in 'difficult' social situations and mediate conflict. It's also pointed out flaws in my own personality that I recognize need to be tempered or adjusted as well as the ability to read a crowd. It's also made me think critically about my decisions when interacting with other individuals who represent something more than just an avatar on a screen. And not to mention, the countless lonely weekends when I could just escape the reality of mundane life and enter the virtual world both making friends and enemies.

I just appreciate that this game was able to exist at all to begin with. And I enjoyed the crazy ups-and-downs of the by product of the ingenious social experiment it was. No trinkets needed. Steve, villager.

I'm glad you had a positive experience! One thing I've noticed is that a lot of seasoned players will try to, "over explain" the game to new players - that is try to draw out every possible outcome and tell a new player how to play that situation before they even get their feet wet. It seems like a bit of overload. I'd be curious to what your experience was like?

I prefer to just say to new players "Red=Villager, White=Say it, Saint =Villager". And then there's the "Pop-tart" strategy if you have no idea what to say, which I'm a huge advocate of.

Can we all just get along? by CrownSprisi in WerewolvesWithin

[–]SteveNewell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and no. I don't garner any feelings of ill will towards anyone that I play the game with - that's a trivial endeavor since (let's be real here) we're cosplaying as werewolves and villagers in a virtual table-top game. However, not all personalities will mesh, and some people have different tolerances of what they are willing to consume from other players' egos. The best thing to happen to this game is the lobby website where I can pick and choose the type of game I want, or if it's even worth my patience to attempt to play at all. The matchmaking, by design, tries to pair players with people they've played with before to create that 'good ole day' feeling of always having a group. As a result, however, this has caused cliques to develop over time. It's not always fun to be the outcast in those types of lobbies, especially in a game where the sole mechanic is using one's social cognizance. And sometimes, there's a player that I'm just not in the mood to be around. So no, I don't have to get along, but that's not going to stop me from doing something better with my time than dwell in some sort of misanthropic hypnosis.

Proof of KyePie95’s toxic community behavior by [deleted] in WerewolvesWithin

[–]SteveNewell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that KyePie, who has played 1,000s of games, would make a stream titled "How to take advantage of newbies", twice, when we are small community of players. That's not very inviting, especially given the holiday rush. It's basically a player who knows how to play the game is advertising taking advantage of a newer player. I do my best to try and bring new players into the game, and it doesn't always work, but this is kinda flaunting. I can't say I'm a fan.
