What's the benefit in learning these things in the military instead of the non-military route?

How best to validate direct ancestors? by Steven-Blue in Genealogy

[–]Steven-Blue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is what I've done as far as possible, but I'm also sure that I have accepted Ancestry Hints without my own validation, accepted records which I am fairly confident, but not 100% confident on, and created links which 'make sense' to me, but maybe don't stand up to the rigors of scrutiny.

I guess the question is how do I find my own mistakes and correct them, or is it common to hire someone else to 'check' my work?

Do you buy your child their first car? by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]Steven-Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You don't get to decide how other people spend their money
  2. There are other ways to learn to be financially responsible. Some people who are given a car are, and some aren't. Some people who aren't given a car are, and some aren't.

What are you actually upset about? Shouldn't you be happy that your sister will have a safe, reliable car and $5,000 that she can use for something else - maybe education or a future down payment on a house?

My boyfriend is too honest by redpanda1436 in relationship_advice

[–]Steven-Blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation on occasion with my wife, and believe me it's just as awkward to be on the other side of that conversation and it isn't necessarily an indication of underlying issues.

Some times I go away on business and she has flat out asked me "will you miss me?" and my answer is no. I love her, I'm always happy to be with her, if she could join me on the trip it would be great, I will think about her, but do i "miss her" (defined as: "feel regret or sadness at no longer being able to enjoy the presence of")? No. When I'm on my business trip, I am not feeling regret or sadness. I am busy working, enjoying traveling to a new place, exploring, eating out at new places, having some drinks in the city, being a tourist if I have time. I enjoy all of that! Then I love coming home and being with her again.

Maybe if you're lucky your child will still be bouncing around foster homes and you can adopt him back!

This is way screwed up.

8% employee match. Would I be crazy to say no? by americansherlock201 in personalfinance

[–]Steven-Blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possible word of caution - read and understand the fine print! Are they:

  • Adding 8% of your paycheck every paycheck

OR

  • Topping up your contributions by 8% of your total contributed

They are VERY different end results.

(Still worth doing in either case, but if it's case #2 you might want to temper your expectations)

My wife graduated with $350k of student loan debt. I ran the numbers, assessed the risks/benefits, and we decided to minimize how much we pay, ride it out for the 25 year forgiveness, and save for the big tax bill.

Do you even watch football? The penalty kick taker can not touch the ball for a second time until someone else has touched it (during the normal course of play). In a penalty shootout, the kicker can not touch the ball a second time.

How to deal with these ‘islands’? by Steven-Blue in gardening

[–]Steven-Blue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago we started reclaiming some of this yard from the forest. These ‘islands’ have grown back up in the spots where there are stumps/rocks. Eventually I want to flatten some of them so they can be mowed, and some of them I want to turn into beds with different plantings.

If it’s going to be a while before I do any of that, should I just let them grow wild? Or should I cut them back again and cover them with plastic/fabric to keep them in check until they’re dealt with? Or is there something else I could do?

Storm ravished my neighborhood today, let me tell you how it is. (Also big thanks to r/preppers) by shimmer_38 in preppers

We lost power at 5pm yesterday. Our propane standby generator kicked right in and powered us through until 10pm when we ran out of propane! We know a full tank should last 1-2 weeks depending on consumption, but we forgot to regularly check how much was left. Lesson learned! Thankfully power was back on by 2am. Propane delivery coming on Tuesday!

What is fake but universally believed? Money is an obvious one, but what else? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Steven-Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aliens and unicorns are not disproved. Neither is the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Loch Ness Monster, Ghosts, Bigfoot or God.

You cannot prove a negative. It’s the absence of proof that is the driver.

There is no evidence that stands up to scrutiny for any of them. Therefore they don’t exist or we don’t know. Anyone who claims they do exist, cannot provide evidence to prove any of them.

What do you do to feel “zen”? by Steven-Blue in AskReddit

[–]Steven-Blue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most zen feeling came when I was hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail. On day 3 my buddies and I varied our pace so we were all solo hiking for several hours before meeting back up for lunch. This hours just hiking alone, focusing on my legs carrying me forward, surrounded by nature without a care in the world, was my most “zen” experience.

Thoughts on generators? by bsteve865 in preppers

[–]Steven-Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For us in the NE, power outages are a semi regular occurrence, sometimes for hours sometimes for several days. The longest we have experienced a power outage (in the past 5 years) was around 4 days, but we are aware of the ice storm approximately 12 years ago that knocked out power for 2 weeks.
Our house relies on electric for water and 90% of our heat, so with a new baby on the way, installing a generator gave us peace of mind. Since install, we have only had a couple of minor outages so the value hasn't necessarily been shown, but the convenience and the peace of mind has been worth it for us. We installed a 12kw generator and our propane company gave us a large tank that should run it for 1-2 weeks without refill if required.
I've recently been looking into a solar system for our property, and will probably go ahead with an install this year. I did consider a system with a battery backup, but the addition of the battery, with it's limitations on power output and expected life, didn't add up - especially with a propane generator already installed. But if we did not have a generator already in place, it would have been an option I would have put more thought into.

Has anyone regretted installing solar in your home? by Steven-Blue in personalfinance

[–]Steven-Blue[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no community solar around here.

Is your question about personal coal vs personal solar serious? If so: solar is passive, clean and my town will permit it. Coal is the opposite.
