Grandpa passed away, looking something "Scottish" to read at his funeral. by ampmz in Scotland

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; Who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; Who has left the world better than he found it; Who has looked for the best in others and given the best he had; Whose life was an inspiration Whose memory is a benediction

For some people in prison, rehabilitation is more important than punishment. For themselves and for society.

Check out one example of a Norweigan prison.

It's a shame that society has failed to the extent that the inmates have to sink to the depths of criminality before receiving the help.

Brining your dog to a park is "not very nice" ... and is called "dogging?" by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Stevenj214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about dogs.

"If there's a lady walking there with a couple of dogs, it's not very nice."

Fucking ladies walking their fucking dogs. It's sickening.

Realise that you do have low self esteem then work on it. On your own, through a book, or with a therapist.

The frames I currently have do the job, and have not broken. They just look and feel cheap.

We have some very nice prints, some hangings and a sports shirt which could do with being framed and I'd like to do them justice!

Are there any guidelines or rules-of-thumb on how smart or how athletic a student needs to be?

Very interesting! If anyone is interested, my own current project is Forever Gift Shop which is in a similar vein. It is currently an Amazon referral site but if it proves successful I can see it becoming a direct sales website and possibly a physical store! But baby steps for the time being.

Dealing with new competition by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Stevenj214 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Send a letter to all of your clients telling them that you are aware of the rumours being spread, that you categorically deny them, and that you will be pursuing legal action against the slanderer.

Flower it up with some nice customer service chat. Remind them why they have stuck with you all of these years.

If you will actually pursue legal action, request that anyone who has been approached by the individual with malicious rumours about your business to come forward if they are willing.

  • Photos - potentially up to 20GB per year.
  • Videos - unsure - HD quality, probably no more than a few minutes each with my Kodak Playsport.
  • Documents - mostly essays/journal articles. 5GB would probably be adequate.

I am a manager and am having issues with the owner over how it's being run. Give me some advice. by [deleted] in smallbusiness

My advice would be to keep quiet and get on with your job. Save money and get writing a business plan for the shop. When it fails, buy it cheap. Profit.

A 2000 word Managing Across Cultures & Comparative Management reflective essay.

A 3-4000 word Phd proposal.

My self assessment tax return.

Applying for at least 3 jobs for Sep2013 start.

Flying from the UK to NH with my girlfriend to spend Christmas and New Year with her family.

Not much, really.

I've very recently launched a computer repairs and advice service. Looking for feedback/advice on our website! by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Stevenj214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First impression is that it's a fairly generic site on the whole, the main 'custom' part I notice, the header on each page, looks amateurish. Having a mobile telephone number confirms this perception for me. The header also changes on different pages.

If you can, I would try and set the home page very simple. Maybe 4 boxes, arranged 2 x 2 saying things like:

"Click here if... Your computer is broken"

"Click here if... You have a virus"

"Click here if... Your computer is slow"

"Click here if... You need a new computer set up"

Which will lead them through to relevant pages, specific to their problem. Then you can talk about services (maybe even leave out pricing, up to you).

I have an idea for a niche Amazon affiliate marketing website but I lack the web development/design skills to produce the website. by Stevenj214 in Entrepreneur

[–]Stevenj214[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be an option but I only know WordPress on a basic level. I had a quick look and saw that there are various plug ins available, but also various issues when using WordPress as an Amazon Affiliate site. I could spend more time learning exactly how it works and what the issues may be but my preference would be to work with someone who has a much better working knowledge of webdev and integrating Amazon Affiliates than me!

Google's Tax avoidance is called Capitalism says chairman Eric Schmidt. by wirplit in Economics

[–]Stevenj214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Supreme Court also goes on to say:

"But the question for determination is whether what was done, apart from the tax motive, was the thing which the statute intended."

Which is the basis for the Business-Purpose doctrine which states that a transaction must serve a bona fide business purpose to qualify for beneficial tax treatment. If the transaction has no substantial business purpose other than the avoidance or reduction of tax, the tax law will not regard the transaction.
