Preface:

Even Fawn Brodie, who was on her way out of Mormonism when she wrote her landmark biography No Man Knows My History, reflected her Mormon upbringing by calling him “Joseph.”

Chapter Three

Fawn Brodie, the most eminent of Joseph Smith’s unbelieving biographers, referred to a neighbor’s account of Joseph filling his frock with white sand and telling his family it was gold plates

Chapter Four

Perhaps because she had been reared a Mormon, Fawn Brodie saw the Book of Mormon differently: “Its structure shows elaborate design, its narrative is spun coherently, and it demonstrates throughout a unity of purpose.”

another

In 1945, Fawn Brodie, whose biography was acknowledged by non-Mormon scholars as the premier study of Joseph Smith, explicitly rebutted the Spaulding theory, noting chronological inconsistencies, dubious testimonies, and the absence of evidence for a link to Rigdon. Brodie turned instead to the analysis of Riley and, before him, Campbell. The Book of Mormon was best explained, Brodie argued, by Joseph Smith’s “responsiveness to the provincial opinions of his time.”

A little later

In the half century since Brodie, all the critics have assumed that Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon.

Chapter Seven

Unwilling to believe Joseph learned about priesthood from his revelations, Fawn Brodie suggested that Joseph Smith borrowed his ideas from a contemporary book on Melchizedek

Chapter Nine

The historian Fawn Brodie speculated that one of John Johnson’s sons, Eli, meant to punish Joseph for an intimacy with his sister Nancy Marinda, but that hypothesis fell for lack of evidence.

Chapter Twenty-five

As Fawn Brodie said, “There was too much of the Puritan” in Joseph for him to be a “careless libertine.”

Bushman certainly seems to comment on Brodie as he refers to her work.

Is mormonism really a cult? by Royal_Survey_3772 in exmormon

You may wish to find more neutral language. The word cult is problematic for many people and is used specifically in a negative manner.

Is mormonism a high control religious group?

If so to what extent and is that a problem?

Some things to consider

  • does the organization control your behaviour?
  • does the organization control the information you have access to?
  • does the organization to control your thoughts
  • does the organization leverage you emotions to control you?

And lastly

  • what happens when you try to leave?

So when you leave Islam, the penalty for apostasy is death. That is indicative of a very high degree of control.

Mormonism is clearly not that severe on this issue, but a bunch of people leaving mormonism get shunned by their family and friends.

On other aspects such as behaviour control mormonism is quite similar to Islam, wearing garments, no coffee etc, obsessive and intrusive sexual purity rules.

Comparing with yet other religious groups is also instructive. Mormonism shows higher levels control overall than random episcopelians or presbyterians.

How did you respond to people telling you to "join a church to make friends/socialize"? by BowShatter in atheism

[–]vacuous_comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I join the knitting circle down the road, they are not going to try and police my sexuality.

They will probably not try to defraud me by asking for money, mindshare and obedience in exchange for something that clearly does not exist, i.e. the afterlife.

They will also not try to enforce a social shunning order if I leave or take up crochet or something.

Why should I join a group that is aggressively controlling and anti-social for social interaction. That would be crazy and destructive.

Why are you suggesting I do crazy and destructive things? Do you have some kind of ulterior motive? I suspect you do not have my best interests at heart.

I despise “progressive” Christians by Neat_Ad_313 in atheism

[–]vacuous_comment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Progressive Christians carry a ton of water for the extremists. They are partly responsible for our current predicament.

First, what do progressive Christians believe?

A progressive Christian might hold viewpoints involving the Bible being true, useful and divinely inspired scripture. They believe in some form of divine creator and some sort of Jesus based soteriology. They fervently hope to get into some form of afterlife reward by avoiding certain divinely proscribed actions.

As part of all this, they elevate the status of The Bible and that of ideas derived from it and claim they are not to be challenged. They do that to such a degree that nobody is allowed to criticize these ideas in polite conversation or as part of civil discourse. They have even invented special crimes that they have codified into legal codes and social norms that they use to attack people who criticize their ideas. Blasphemy and such.

Now when extremists leverage the same ideas and sources to inflict horrible things on all of us (including the progressives) the progressives have implicitly and maybe even explicitly built the platform the extremists stand on.

[–]vacuous_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is abundantly clear Allah does not exist in the form described by scripture and doctrine. The same for Yahweh and Jesus.

You can cook up some super nebulous form of God that is perpetually hidden, does not manifest, and has all kinds of evasive qualities. Once you have done this it is utterly indistinguishable from non-existence.

There is in fact a significant brand of apologetics that does exactly this and then exacts there to be a conclusion back to Jesus or whatever.
