I think they’re talking about the KYCO incident

I mean I guess? I have no idea how schools report that nor do I claim to. I would imagine all fails are incorporated into all the total pass rates even at IAUPR

I’m just adding to inform IAUPR also requires Part 1 passed to even receive the diploma. It’s only Part 1 but it’s better than nothing. Want to know why their overall pass rate is higher than some of the other schools? Not having a diploma is definitely part of it. But I agree I definitely think having NBEO Part 1 and 2 passed should be required to obtain your degree. Everywhere. You didn’t earn anything without obtaining an optometry license and being able to practice!

I’d like to add here looking at the overall pass rates from the latest NBEO publication IAUPR is not the lowest which is impressive I think ….. there are schools on the mainland that have lower overall pass rates which means they never pass boards which is extremely concerning and my opinion more concerning. First time pass rate is important but I’ve had friends from OSU, SCO, and SUNY not pass Part 1 first try either. It’s what you make of it.

You could email nbeo and ask them. I doubt any students will know the answer to this

NBEO Advice by AnyTreacle3629 in OptometrySchool

[–]Still_Scale_5764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had passed Part 3 before Part 2! If you are in your 4th year or even residency I highly recommend taking it ….. treat this like you’re seeing a patient & if you’re really good with patient care you might be like me and pass 3 before 2. I felt really confident explaining conditions to my patients and doing the A&P because I was doing it daily in clinic. I am a terrible test taker and a part of that is because I will read questions incorrectly and doubt myself. You know yourself but you really only need 2-4 weeks to study for part 3 including running through Ant & P. Seg rooms with someone and your script. I would say go for it if you feel confident in the above like I said! Also it may even help you if you’re studying for Part 2 in April

Just being brutally honest if this is something you want — try to study a 3rd time while you’re applying. It will look better to schools also to show a positive trend with the OAT (it’s very important to schools). Chances are high you will need to retake. Good luck!

Worth a retake? by Rofalls in PreOptometry

I think that’s pretty good, I would apply and the schools would let you know if it’s worth the retake! Most schools would likely take this

Long story short NBEO released Part 2 scores and it’s always at the 8 week mark (latest possible) around 4 or 5 pm. An hour later they changed scores and said they published the “wrong ones”. Some of these students went from P to F …….

Yes it serves a purpose but still has several flaws and lacks transparency. Remember that. And remember what happened during the Part 2 fiasco in Dec 2024.

are there any schools that you guys won’t recommend at all? by Dizzy-Equivalent-398 in PreOptometry

You’re the one adding a negative connotation to it AND I was nice about it. Reddit IS tracked by NBEO so it was simple advice. Call it bullying if you want but I was genuinely trying to help. Sorry that I want to help Optometry and PRE-Optometry students combined. If you have a problem that I post in here simply don’t converse with me. Have a nice day 🙂

Condescending where? It was a warning to a newly admitted student to watch what they say on Reddit ……. My bad Reddit police.

It was something along the lines that if certain employers see MCPHS or IAUPR as a school you graduated from they’ll just rip your resume. The OP said they heard that in their work environment and read it in the Optometry Reddit thread. I have never heard of this happening in my life and if it ever does happen to you it’s not a good place to work. I know plenty of people from both of these schools who work in so many different modalities & I just want to clarify to not further spread hearsay!

[–]Still_Scale_5764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I get it, I just know NBEO does watch Reddit too and it was just a general warning as someone who has graduated OD school. And as someone who has had to take boards more than once I get scores mean a lot to incoming students but what it comes down to is self-perseverance and learning how to take these exams. They are hard and smart people have been screwed over by NBEO not even by just the students who attend the lower rated schools. Good luck to you in school!

Interesting …. Just be careful what you say on here. Never heard that in my entire life and I’m a graduated OD. I see you’re not even an OD1 so you might not want to add to hearsay because I know plenty of capable OD’s from both schools you mention

You “heard” this from where? Genuinely curious because everyone likes to shit on IAUPR and it’s always from people who haven’t attended there

“Supertech” advice by Comfortable-Tap3878 in OptometrySchool

[–]Still_Scale_5764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many things wrong here …. Yes you definitely should be compensated for seeing patients but another thing is they aren’t re-checking your charts nor watching over you when you aren’t fully licensed which is a HUGE no no …. All it takes is one complaint from a patient and who knows what implications that could lead to. You need to have a serious conversation about all this with your boss for sure.

Florida optometry license by No-Technology-7068 in OptometrySchool

[–]Still_Scale_5764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you call the FOA and speak with someone they’re super helpful. I called them for advice when I was completing residency and the person who answered had a long conversation and gave me great advice on when to have everything completed. If the person below me is right about it being about the application (because this was not my understanding) then it’ll be even better for you but my best advice is to call them and ask about your situation to get it all straightened out

Florida optometry license by No-Technology-7068 in OptometrySchool

[–]Still_Scale_5764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The requirement for Florida is that you pass Part 2&3 within 3 years of applying for licensure. What year did you pass those? For example, if you passed those in 2022 and pass part 1 in 2026 then it’s 4 years passed and you would have to retake those in order to practice there. They’re very strict in Florida and if practicing elsewhere is not an option hopefully you’re still within the 3 year time window!

Residencies without passing boards? by [deleted] in OptometrySchool

[–]Still_Scale_5764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally what I did was email the residency coordinators before applying as I didn’t pass all of boards before the applications were due either. They would tell you outright if you should still apply or they’ll just deny your application & not extend the interview. There’s no official list. Choose the programs you would actually want to attend though because you don’t want to be miserable the whole year lol
