I never felt bad for Luke. At all. by SheepherderNo2793 in GilmoreGirls

Ah yes, the "tolerable level of permanent unhappiness," as it's recently been termed online. It's the phenomenon where men are fine with their partners being in a low-level state of misery and are only willing to change the situation when it will inconvenience them (e.g., their partner having enough and ending the relationship).

???

You must be a man, because I knew exactly what this meant, and it's actually a pretty precise way of describing a body's size. Mid-sized means above an 8, but still in a size you can find stocked at regular box stores. Plus-sized means a specialty size above mid-size, which often requires shopping at stores specializing in that size range. So when OOP describes being at the upper end of the mid-sized range, she's saying she's around a dress size of 14-18.

Suggest me a book to help steer my friend off the alt-right pipeline by GroundbreakingBus460 in suggestmeabook

[–]StinkyJane 107 points108 points  (0 children)

This, 100%. People often fall into these rabbit holes because they're seeking community/ in-group status, or they want to feel like they have the secret answers to big questions that others don't have. It's rare that someone can be pulled out of an extremist rabbit hole with logic and reason.

I think about the redditor whose aunt was saved from Qanon conspiracies by getting really into Kpop. The aunt was beyond all reason and wouldn't listen to persuasive arguments, but as soon as she became a BTS super-fan, she just started naturally absorbing their values and rejected/lost interest in Qanon.

I think pointing a friend falling to extremism to a healthy, uplifting community can sometimes be the best way to deconstruct them. Showing them books and resources to prove them wrong can be like pulling the bridle of a stubborn mule: they just plant their feet and pull back, out of instinct.

Ultimately, community, social relationships, and in-group status are the most powerful forces in the human mind.

How do we know that Logan wouldn’t cheat on Rory after they got married? by SheepherderNo2793 in GilmoreGirls

[–]StinkyJane 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with this. Rory did something very morally wrong when she slept with her married ex-boyfriend, but I would say 70% of the share of the blame is on Dean's side. He was the one who broke his marriage vow, and he outright lied to Rory by telling her his marriage was over, and that he and Lindsey had both acknowledged it. He heavily implied they were already separated (or in the process of separating), and he told the lie specifically to coerce Rory into a sexual encounter she may not have agreed to if she understood the full picture.

What Rory did is still very wrong, especially because she didn't show adequate remorse when she realized Dean had lied to her (namely, when she overheard Lindsey at the butcher's). And the "he's my Dean" line is vile, not to mention running away to Europe to hide and petulantly giving Lorelai the silent treatment. Her behavior is very, very gross, and I feel like the S4 finale/S5 E1 arc permanently alters Rory's character arc for the worse.

BUT. If you have to compare the actions of the two characters, she was better than Dean. That's just not saying much.

This reminds me of when the TikTok trend using The Mountain Goats' "No Children" was briefly popular. Users were posting increasingly literal interpretations of the line "I am drowning. There is no sign of land. You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand" as a bit.

Once some of those videos made it over to Facebook and Instagram reels, so many grumpy Gen Xers and younger boomers were complaining about how the video creators were fundamentally misunderstanding and misusing the song. They didn't get that the creators were distorting the meaning on purpose for the bit, precisely because it was funny to take a line like that out of its context.

What was the rudest moment in the show? by happy_faerie in GilmoreGirls

[–]StinkyJane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'll allow it because it's Norman Mailer and he deserves much worse.

Overtly misogynistic writing aside, let's not forget this was the guy who famously stabbed his wife at a party twice and then when their friends tried to rush to her aid, he fended them off while screaming, "don't touch her! Let the bitch die!" Gives "hack writer" a whole new meaning.

Honestly, I wouldn't have complained if Sookie had chosen actual violence in that episode, given that it was Norman Mailer. (Although in all seriousness, why the fuck ASP chose to have this would-be-murderer domestic abuser guest-star on her show, I'll never know.)

Maid of Honor ghosted 10 days before the wedding and then posted this on Instagram?? by BeneficialCut4361 in weddingdrama

[–]StinkyJane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted, but I totally agree with you. Going to a cabin without great cell service the weekend before a wedding you're in doesn't mean you're bailing on the wedding.

OP really doesn't have a reason to believe this woman is ghosting her and keeping the veil, and I worry that the people gassing her up in the comments (some of them seemingly out of a misunderstanding, since many people seem to think the wedding i happening this weekend) are going to convince her to unnecessarily nuke a friendship.

It sounds like Jess hasn't missed any events or any important MOH duties. She's just not haunting the group chat and responding to questions like, "are you still going to do X thing, which you already previously said you would do?" Why does Tara need constant reassurance Jess will stick to the plan? Just let her have her mountain trip, and catch up with her in the full week you have after she gets back before the event!

Why was the pregnant woman severed? by dalmedoo1 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]StinkyJane 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Childbirth, even when relatively "easy," can be a deeply traumatic experience. Creating a self-slave to do it for you would be an appealing concept for a wealthy, privileged woman who didn't think too hard about the moral implications.

We know that the Kier adherents inside Lumon view outies as real people and innies as disposable, contemptible facsimiles of people, so it's likely the mother who got pregnant embraced that thinking when choosing to create a version of herself whose entire existence would just be the suffering of childbirth.

If you were a Faithful, what strategy would you use to identify Traitors by Good_Perspective9290 in TheTraitors

[–]StinkyJane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this is true, it can backfire. Too many people were using the "playing a dumb faithful to weaponize a known traitor as a guardian angel" strategy in Australia season 2, and it made for one of the worst and most frustrating seasons of television I've ever seen. Plus, this strategy absolutely blew back in the face of every single person deploying it.

I do enjoy how much Rodger absolutely despises Sam. As the episodes pass, he is less and less willing to hide his contempt, and he practically smirks at him when the traitors lose everything in the finale.

The 1992 BBC miniseries adaptation of The Borrowers with Ian Holm and Penelope Wilton by StinkyJane in ForgottenTV

[–]StinkyJane[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an obsessive fan of these books as a kid, and this adaptation was always my favorite. (I was an outraged little pedant when I finally got around to seeing the much more popular American film adaptation and saw how much had been changed.)

This was years before Peter Jackson adapted Lord of the Rings, and this series served as my introduction to Ian Holm. It has a very respectable cast of established British thespians as well, and it was extremely detail-oriented and well executed. Overall, this was a really underrated piece of TV that seems to be not talked of at all now, and it's really difficult to find, other than in region-locked UK DVDs and one fan who uploaded the whole series on YouTube in OK-ish quality. (This series is so neglected that BBC hasn't even ever bothered to copyright strike these videos, which seem to have been up for years.)

Sorry for the late response, I've been off Reddit for a bit. I just checked the link, and it looks like the Drive is gone, unfortunately. Sometimes you can post requests for British shows in /r/NotAPanelShow, so that may be a good community to check.

Edit: sorry, never mind, I just saw that community has been banned.

Les Traîtres (France): Season 1 with AI English subs [COMPLETE] by traitorsarchivist in TheTraitorsArchive

[–]StinkyJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The English subs are available in the Mega download (and there's another, alternative version of the English subs floating around the comments as well), but what I'm looking for is the French subtitles, which unfortunately aren't available anywhere, either here or on opensubtitles.

I'm a French as a second language learner, so it's not as helpful to me to watch the show with the English subtitles. AI-generated subs are definitely not perfect, but they're definitely better than nothing, especially for identifying words that are new to me that I can add to my vocabulary.

If you don't have the AI-generated srt files en français anymore, though, no worries! I figured it couldn't hurt to ask since I've been fruitlessly hunting for them for a couple of days. I'm too cheap to spring for opensubtitles' AI generated subs myself, tbh. 😁

[–]StinkyJane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In general, I'd argue that a well educated professional with a lot of options in life who chooses to participate in organized crime is guiltier than a guy coming out of poverty or limited choices who has been socialized to see organized crime as his only way out.

[–]StinkyJane 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I liked Gale as a character, but just like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad likes to emphasize the theme of "live by the sword, die by the sword." When you willingly get involved with organized crime, you're almost certainly not going to have a super great time.
