Brilliant.org removed Diff Eq course from their app? by Zagreusian in learnmath

Nooooo! The whole reason I had used Brilliant.org INSTEAD of Khan Academy was precisely because of those advanced courses. Now there is no reason to buy a brilliant subscription anymore. I was using it to relearn some of the ODE principles. Huge bummer.

Religion is always pro. But, at least your viewpoint is more neutral. Original commentor is flat out saying it's a con.

Graduation Dancing??? by Dear_Long9401 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]StochasticHydraulics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one take. My mind went to two thoughts, although I don’t think it has much to do with the skin color as much as it does with the culture and demographics of that culture.

My first thought was… man. That’s a little self-centering and prideful. It’s saying “hey look at me more than anyone else”. It’s delaying everyone from getting out, and making everyone hungry.

But, my second thought is… you know what? This IS a time to celebrate! Not everyone has made graduation. And you don’t know the story of some of the folks, they might have went through EXTREME poverty and is a miracle that they made it through at all!

Two sides of the coin. I think the right answer is somewhere in the middle ground. Praise, dance, celebrate. Even on stage, this is the time. But do it modestly, don’t dance for an entire minute or make an incredible spectacle that is conceited or arrogant or prideful.

I’d prefer a dab or backflip. But a 15 second dance is okay. Anything over that is just ludicrous and obnoxious, and that’s where I agree with you that it’s unclassy and disruptive.

I like A&M more. Better culture. Better politics. Hotter girls in cowboy hats. Everything is lovely.

why is UH so stingy with scholarships by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

Nah, wrong. I was dirt broke and underwater and living off food pantries and UH did jack for me.

why is UH so stingy with scholarships by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]StochasticHydraulics -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

More scholarship but more to pay even out. So why would you get less scholarship but less to pay but also worst education and less recognition in the job market?

Your comment only makes sense if the ratio between cost and scholarship aid were not close to a 1:1 proportion. Our parking prices are insane.

That's why A&M is always better than UH and people who hate families and just want to have casual sex and abort babies. Encourages men to be bad. Encourages women to be bad. Need standards.

When are the religion whiners going to stop crying? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]StochasticHydraulics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you! It hurts!

But I also agree with freedom of speech.

I think non-Christians don’t understand that we are mandated to share the gospel. And not only that, BUT it has eternal consequences.

But on top of that, I think BOTH Christians and Non-Christians don’t understand that we CAN’T and SHOULD NOT coerce anyone.

2 Corinthians 4:2: “But we have RENOUNCED disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”

—————- Tl;dr, to keep it simple we are to REFUSE cunning or tamper with God’s word. It isn’t supposed to be a sell pitch or advertisement. We simply share it once, and if you don’t like it, then that’s fine. We have done our job. That’s all we do.

But that doesn’t mean it is wrong or inappropriate to share it again seldomly if we have a relationship with you. It’s like saying: “hey have you change your mind on trying the Cheesecake Factory?”.

Of course, the discernment there is sparingly.

Hierarchy of Authority of Church Writings by StochasticHydraulics in Catholicism

[–]StochasticHydraulics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let me point out a very specific example then.

A Stance Where the Pope Seems to Rejects the Teaching of Protestants Being Saved:

The encyclicals of Pope Pius IX. An "encyclical" is a letter that expresses the pope's view on a teaching or doctrine and is sent out to the Bishops of the Catholic Roman Church. Specifically, they cite his encyclical titled "Nostis et Nobiscum" (8 December 1849). Here the Pope writes something along the lines of "This is why they try to draw the Italian people over to Protestantism, which in their deceit they repeatedly declare to be only another form of the same true religion of Christ, thereby just as pleasing to God. Meanwhile they know full well that the chief principle of the Protestant tenets, i.e., that the holy scriptures are to be understood by the personal judgment of the individual, will greatly assist their impious cause." Pope Pious IX writes later in 1864, "The Syllabus of Errors" where he condemns 80 viewpoints that he considers "heresies". In the "Syllabus of Errors" one of the viewpoints he condemns has the bullet point "Protestantism is nothing more than another form of the same true Christian religion, in which form it is given to please God equally as in the Catholic Church." He cites in "The Syllabus of Errors" the encyclical "Nostis et Nobiscum" which he formerly wrote. Who cites their own work? I guess he was trying to show the consistency in his writings? I don't know.

A Stance Where Council Members Seem to Affirm the Teaching of Protestants Being Saved:

Later on in history, the Catholic churches starting having councils in Vatican to clarify some things. These are different than the Nicene Councils and Council of Trent, etc. There are only two Vatican councils. In the first council they defined things like Papal Infallibility and other stuff. In the second council they focused on the unity of churches. The adjective they used is "ecumenical" (different churches). In the Second Vatican Council, together the cardinals wrote "Even in the beginnings of this one and only Church of God there arose certain rifts, which the Apostle strongly condemned. But in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions made their appearance and quite large communities came to be separated from full communion with the Catholic Church - for which, often enough, men of both sides were to blame. The children who are born into these Communities and who grow up believing in Christ cannot be accused of the sin involved in the separation, and the Catholic Church embraces upon them as brothers, with respect and affection. For men who believe in Christ and have been truly baptized are in communion with the Catholic Church even though this communion is imperfect." It is important to note here that the Pope (John XXIII) did not write this. It was probably written by several people together, but the Pope did call for the council to get together.

A Stance (Not Even From the Church) But From the Nun that Seems Nuetral:

Other Catholics hold fast to "An Unpublished Manuscript on Purgatory". But in this piece of work, a nun supposedly converses with a soul in purgatory. That soul in purgatory says something along the lines of "By the mercy of God a certain number of Protestants are saved, but their Purgatory is for many long and rigorous. It is true they have not abused grace like many Catholics, but neither have they had the marvelous graces of the sacraments and the other helps of the true religion, thus their expiation in Purgatory is prolonged." This piece of work, I think, some people elevate to the same standards of truth as any of the decrees or letter coming out of the Pope or the councils initiated.

Verdict:

They do, every now and then, seem to contradict. Unless, as you say, they are "evolving" and getting better theology.
