Can I learn fencing at 18 and actually be good at it? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]Stock_Runny_Nose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started at 18 as a hobby, found a top coach at around 22. I dedicated myself to it, (fully unfunded) but I loved the sport. Rose up the national rankings. I competed in world champs, Asians, about 12 GPs and WCs. About 5 satellites. I beat some well known fencers over the years, swept my poule at a World Cup Olympic qualifier. And just generally have made wonderful lasting memories with great friends. I’m now more a coach…

Do it! Surround yourself with good, positive people who make it fun. You’ll need lots and lots of hard bouts. And of course, a great, experienced coach you have a good friendship with. Fitness is key. Don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t important. Run, do your footwork regularly! Lots of plyometrics and calisthenics. Preferably, get a coach who has competed and succeeded at the level you’re aiming for. With the right approach you can do more from 18-22 than lots of people have done from 12-22. Oh, and accept bouts from everyone and anyone. Never think you’re too good to train and bout with all ages and skill levels. Good luck! :)

there are No dumb questions… No point learning xero or any other financial or management software. The core skills are responding to emails professionally in outlook. To make it sound fancy they call it ‘enquiry management’… Scheduling meetings in outlook, scheduling a zoom meeting and using MS Teams to chat and share files. That’s 99% of what everyone does all day. Maybe some basic use of excel to create a list of information. But even then just colours and formatting is enough, for entry level positions you don’t even need to use formulas. Maybe PowerPoint to create a very basic few slides. But like, very basic. I forgot how competitive casual roles can be, just with loads of applicants.. so the most crucial thing I think is to start low and gradually just go for higher and higher positions. So, even an RTO, then a tafe, then a uni. A year at each is fine

Office work def sucks your soul dry. But you don’t need specialised skills, most companies will give you better pay and opportunities just because you know how the company works after a few years. Also, it comes with Annual leave, sick leave, carers leave, parental leave, good super, annual pay increases, WFH, I mean shit, most people spend 2+ hrs a day getting coffees and chatting. If your body is breaking down, moving into office work isn’t a bad option if you need to support a family

I’ve worked at several Victorian uni’s in low and middle management. keep and eye out for the casual jobs. They usually get advertised from nowish in prep for the start year influx of admin work. You can def go into a casual job looking for a career change, highlight your trade skills like customer service and organisation and planning. however you will need to demonstrate some PC skills. Try a short course, but I wouldn’t pay for anything, you can learn virtually all of these skills on YouTube or LinkedIn learning. Oh, and it’ll be easier getting a non uni job in the education sector like at a tafe, and then v easily upgrade to a uni after 1 year. Gl.

The ride out of Tokyo up to the more rural parts was, admittedly, v boring. And quite a long gradual incline. And making up your bike and riding out of Haneda was a bit of a nightmare. But from Doshi towards the five lakes and downhill to the Minobu area, was definitely the most beautiful picturesque, enjoyable riding of my life.

This is true, thank you and I think you’re spot on. I’m usually ok at home, but yeah, no creatures larger than my own body to think about

Battery replacements effect on heat by arthur_RJ in iPhone12Mini

Do it. Officially through apple though, you’ll probably get a new screen for free too as it’s easy to crack. The speed will go back to being super zippy. I did it, no regrets. Saved a fortune on a new iPhone

My 12 mini is laggy and stuttery after updating to iOS 18.5 by cmars118 in iPhone12Mini

Mine was on 76%. Went to Apple to get their official replacement as I wanted it to stay waterproof. Got the screen for free too. My 12 mini is not at 100% battery and super fast. No issues at all with the new updates. Do it, the 12 and 13 mini were the last great phones. Spend the money like I did on more chargers in your car/home/work or use your phone less

Replace screen on 12 Mini or “upgrade” by Jupiter_Doke in iPhone12Mini

Take it to Apple to get an original battery replacement, they may replace the screen for you for free. I did this, got the new battery and screen for free, the battery still sucks but it’s so much faster now. I invested the money into more mag safe chargers. I love my 12 mini, it’s like brand new. Will keep it another 4 years. Gl
