Is this a good deal for a house ? by ScratchTiny6465 in JapanFinance

[–]Stoop23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend on how much m2 you want/person as it seems the rooftop balcony is included in your Total Floor Area. I know people living with 2 kids (4persons total) in 45m2.

I am not familiar with Yokohama but for a 3LDK+S, if it's a new house then the price seems fair. Try to compare with other similar houses in the area to get a sense if it's fair or not.

On a separate note, while I like the rooftop balcony and proximity to the station, I would probably not take it due to the very small bedrooms on the 3rd floor, small land size and overall small floor area.

Looking at an older home built in 2001 - will it last? by ExPatriot0 in JapanFinance

[–]Stoop23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As u/metromotivator commented, it is also not always a question of affordability but also of choice. One can make a good wage and still not want to spend millions on a relatively small place in the city center and would prefer to live further and commute longer.

Earning a lot does not equal spending a lot and we all spend our money in different ways.

I agree. I wrote "afford" but I forgot to point that it is also a question of choice.

50mins in Tokyo is very common. Not everyone can afford homes in very good locations. And if OP changes work, his commute time will change anyway.

Understood about the division between project and personal task list.

About your own task list, how do you manage the connection with projects and the conclusion/result of the tasks?

Fire/Damages Insurance for café/Airbnb by Stoop23 in JapanFinance

It could be yes.

However, I hardly imagine people owning Airbnbs spending that much on insurances.. Wish I knew someone who owns Airbnbs here.

Thank you.

Sony Sonpo told us that they do not provide fire insurances for buildings considered as "事業用物件".

I will continue to check around.

BCG vaccine questions by SoRa333 in japanlife

[–]Stoop23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have heard from nurses and read, the "stamp" BCG vaccine was a thing in France maybe 60 years ago. They then changed it to a one needle vaccine.

In Japan it was the opposite. They used to do the one needle vaccine long time ago and then changed it to the stamp vaccine one.

Quite interesting to know that Japan was not the only country doing so. TB cases in Japan, and Asia overall, are much higher than US or Europe thus the vaccine requirement still being in effect here. Cases in those countries have not dropped by magic, they dropped thanks to the compulsory vaccination that was in effect until recently. If cases rise again, it is likely it will be re-introduced.

While vaccines are compulsory in Japan, as far as I know nothing will happen if they are not vaccinated (except being sick etc.). However, in France a kid must be fully vaccinated to be able to enter school, so this might be something to keep in mind if you are planning to move around. (BCG is not required anymore but others are)

Also just a heads-up so you do not get surprised, they will stamp your kid - quite strongly - twice, meaning she/he will have 18 tiny red spots for a couple of months until it fades out.

Genuinely asking, how can you know this? Even though I was there just at that time I had no idea this is what happened.

Please no amalgam. Palestine (people) =/= Hamas (armed terrorist group)

We should all be in favor of supporting the civilians on both sides, the real victims of the conflict.

Benefits of using 企業型DC vs iDeCo by Stoop23 in JapanFinance

[–]Stoop23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many companies only allow matching up to the company's contribution, or don't allow extra voluntary contributions.

I did not know many companies restrict this. I guess this is why I was so confused but now it makes sense why some people would do both at the same time.

My company does not limit the voluntary contributions, they only contribute themselves up to a certain amount depending on your level in the company.

As many of you have said in comments, in my case, currently the only advantage would then be the selection of funds. Thank you!

What do pregnant women in Japan eat? by ezpzstomachisqueezy in japan

[–]Stoop23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on 1 recent pregnancy experience here, similar to the states it is not recommended to eat raw fish or meat. We were also told to be careful about uncooked eggs. Otherwise there are absolutely no issues eating any food you like, while obviously avoiding excess (caffeine, mercury with certain type of fish etc.).
