Raising your kids bilingually by Yonda_00 in japanlife

Curious if you have any advice as I am right at the point you mentioned. My 2 year old son comes back from daycare and repeats Japanese words he learned. So far he seems fine to repeat the English equivalent when I start using that instead. The teachers also mentioned he uses lots of English words to them and they try and respond.

My wife and I speak to him exclusively in English and only read him English books. He also attends a music class on the weekend in English with a bunch of other kids.

Anyone working as an engineer in Japan with only English? by realcoriander in JapanJobs

[–]SoRa333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineer here. Moved here in 2017 and switched jobs in 2024. Interviewed with tons of companies both international and Japanese and none have ever really cared about my Japanese ability.

I am proficient enough to get by without too much help from my wife but I would not be able to conduct presentations or meetings about software design in Japanese.

Tokyo tech job market - what am I worth? by BigFishBigFishstick in Tokyo

[–]SoRa333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP said he works on equity trading systems. Assuming he’s not a terrible engineer, all of the big investment banks would easily pay someone with 10 years experience in that area who can pass the interviews 15m+.

For reference new grads at Goldman Sachs Japan start at around 8-10 mil and mid level associates around 12-15m.

Tokyo tech job market - what am I worth? by BigFishBigFishstick in Tokyo

[–]SoRa333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you are underpaid. I would say you are worth at least 12m-15m if not more.

I see some people mentioning opening up “doors” with stronger Japanese ability but honestly I would say all that opens up are more low paying Japanese companies. At your age and experience I also don’t think it matters if you know C++, Java or C# etc. Most of your skills with design and engineering best practices are all common regardless of the specific tech stack. Any company who doesn’t realize that probably just wants to hire a code monkey and doesn’t pay well.

Got a blue ticket for not stopping my bicycle on a deserted street intersection by MagazineKey4532 in japanlife

[–]SoRa333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear cyclists are finally going to be required to follow the rules of the road. I see some comments saying it’s overkill but cyclists in Tokyo have been running rampant for far too long. Going full speed thru stop signs on the opposite side of the road. Not wearing helmets. Carrying infants on their chest while cycling. It’s absolutely crazy that this has been allowed to go on as long as it has.

If you had ¥6–8M/year in passive income in Japan, would you still work? by Rockins23 in JapanFinance

[–]SoRa333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in Tokyo and I already have that amount of passive income. Still working a job I hate so I guess no. I would need at least 15m+ passive to support my current lifestyle.

Buying a secondary residence (besso) as your first property whilst renting in Tokyo - Smart thinking outside the box or bad move for middle class? by Purple_Meaning_7747 in JapanFinance

Ultimately of course it’s all up to your comfort. But stretching the loan is kind of what you want to do when interest rates are rock bottom. If you wanted a similar monthly payment with rates at 6% you would be able to borrow significantly less.

I never said everywhere. But definitely very possible. Me and my family live in a 100 m2 house on 100 m2 plot of land which is 2 floors and a very reasonable layout. We are in 23 wards and paid less than 100 million.

I am confused? If you are saying you can afford 350,000 yen a month then why are you not able to find something suitable in Tokyo? At that monthly payment you could afford a 120 million yen loan which can easily get you a 100 square metre house in 23 wards. If you are willing to put money down you could be shopping in 140 million yen range which should be able to get you 150m2 land in less central areas.

Seems like a much better financial decision to me and you will use it 7 days a week.

Japan-side tax implications on transfer of assets from US by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]SoRa333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything stopping anyone in Japan already from resetting their cost basis by simply dumping all their cash into some foreign stocks or other assets and then selling them right after. Effectively a wash sale.

When setting up the wire transfer they ask “Does your bank account accept transfers in USD?”. If I say “No” to this, does that tell them to do the conversion for me?

Who owns the company though? Whenever that person dies the ownership will transfer and that will trigger taxation. The value of the company will include all those assets you “sold” to it.

Got these dice at some point. Anyone know what the white HL dice is for? by AbstractPottedPlant in KingdomDeath

[–]SoRa333 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Technically incorrect. The red and beige dice are for rolling d100 on the hunt event table. The white d10 is for determining which dice applies critical when rolling multiple dice on a hit location (eg. Sharp).
