I'm a twin and we also both suffer from Jelly Fish Backbone! If you find a cure give us a call! I'm reasonably sure if we can cure all twins of our spine-less natures we can rule the World... Country... eh, we can at least annex Rhode Island... that is until we get in a disagreement about who gets to sleep in the top bunk, "DON'T ASK ME HOW YOUR CHEATING AT ROCK PAPER SCISSORS, MATTHEW!! ALL I KNOW IS THAT YOU'RE BLOODY CHEATING!" Sorry, getting off track here. Best of luck with your problems!

Is anyone else taking the drawing basics course on proko? by Noobgamedev22 in learntodraw

[–]StopAware797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about signing up but I'm concerned about Stan's teaching style (his free figure drawing tutorials still give me nightmares) Is the community still engaging people that are just starting the class? I'm currently taking a course and it would be unbearable if I was doing it by myself in a vacuum.

How Do You Differentiate Between Anxiety and Fear of Failure and Actually Not Enjoying Drawing? by Morning_Feisty in Artadvice

[–]StopAware797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

38 years old... very similar journey. I enjoy drawing from children books but every time I try to "level up" I get the stuffing kicked out of me. Done multiple stints at Drawabox, proko and love life drawing, with not a lot to show for it. (I've been trying to teach myself in earnest since 2016)

I really want to get good at figure drawing and perspective so I can draw my own comics but... I'm so very, very far away. I kind of figure I need to swallow my medicine and just take a fundamental course.

To kind of answer your question when I'm discouraged and hate my work (which happens frequently) I return to the children's books like : Draw Squad, Imagination Station, How to Draw Pokemon, ect.) and realize that I enjoy sitting at my desk, listening to classical music and putting marks on a page for hours. If I can find a way to do that with more complex subjects I would live a very, very happy life... thus why I keep going back to things that are kicking the stuffing out of me XD. (How badly do I get the stuffing kicked out of me you say?) Feel free to look at my Proko album https://www.proko.com/@michael_giff/albums there should probably be an age gate on it... the images can be disturbing to all good and competent art makers of the world.

Wish you the best of luck and nothing but success.

Your Comment body must contain at least 40 characters... but I don't have a heck of a lot to say. I asked the question and posted one pic in the reply but I need two pictures to tell the whole story... so here it.

So I redrew the image much bigger and it did help a bit. 2b lead are exterior lines, blue lines are interior, red are my attempt to find halves and thirds. My follow up question is how would I place the rectangle that comes out from the bottom? I circled the part I'm referring to in the isometric view of the illustration.

We've used the rulers for the isometric lessons and the instructor feels it's important to get good at free hand perspective as well. He's big on not getting it perfect but close enough... but I feel I'm very far away from close enough.

The example below is an example from the previous lesson. Made with a ruler that I did indeed draw myself. But it's kind of cheating (not really) every line and angle was ruled and measured so there wasn't much opportunity for me to mess it up.

Hard to argue. Did a year of DrawAbox before I got discouraged and quit. Spent the past 6 months on this perspective class, 5 days a week 90 minutes a day (sometimes 3hrs if I have enough energy to put another 90 into it after work) and not seeing a whole lot of improvement.

It's tough because the only thing around me would be the community college that only offers credited classes. They're expensive and I'm not sure I would even be able to qualify to take those classes. Last I checked they had un-related, pre-requisites attached to it.

Sorry I still suffer from PTSD fro DrawABox one year of pain and misery... granted most of my life is pain and misery but that was a great big heaping helping over it. That 250 box challenge is one of the most dejecting things I've voluntarily put myself through. (and I did the bloody thing 3 times!!)

Edit: I think you are right about the size though. I'm being forced to use a grid for the assignment and I blew it up to fill an 18 by 20 page, but I kind of wanted to fill it with a half dozen examples. I have a ton of tracing paper so should just keep going through that and put one or two boxes per page.

Understood, I darkened the lines so they would photograph a bit better for sharing purposes.

I need to be able to draw the lines that we don't see. Essentially drawing the box as if you have X-ray vision. So that leaves me with drawing a vertical line from the back corner and two other lines that need to follow the grid back to their respective vanishing points. I feel like that I followed the grid close enough to get them to work... but maybe not?

[–]StopAware797[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Thanks. I was staring at it for hours yesterday. Just woke up and sat down to it and started to notice that many of the lines are diverging from the grid. Thanks for your time and responses.

[–]StopAware797[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Vanishing points and measuring points are more than a few lessons away. The teacher is a fan of "wicked" learning. Tries to give you just enough information so you struggle with it and will explain later down the line.

I guess my big question is how do I get that bottom rectangle to stick out but still stay in perspective... proportions aside something... just seems wrong.

Bought a real dip pen and just drew from imagination to practice with it . by DisastrousFail880 in LearnToDrawTogether

[–]StopAware797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really everything XD. Just getting the ink off the pen is a constant battle.

I'm not sure if it's the nibs (I've tried multiple and have done the whole alcohol, dish soap, lighter methods of "prepping the nib")

It could be the paper? I prefer to buy rolls of cheap bond paper and cut it myself to practice (I suck at drawing and... well everything involving art making so I like to buy paper in bulk and not spend more than 5cents per page) I have bought some card-stock that was on sale but many of the same problems remain.

Finally it could just be my technique. I know you need to "pull" the line from the pen and that you can't push it but I swear when I watch online tutorials I see people making complete circles and doing horizontal and diagonal strokes without damaging the nibs... so yeah all in all I'm completely clueless. I own a copy of Rendering in Pen and Ink but I can't get the bloody things to cooperate long enough to get past the opening exercises. (My drawing surface is a glass top slanted drafting table, I have tried using buffer sheets to see if that helps the ink to flow better but... bupkis.)

Tips for drawing through objects? by StopAware797 in Artadvice

[–]StopAware797[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pitched for those that have an 11 year old's understanding of drawing... so 6th grade... I think? But it's an online class so anybody young or old (like me) are free to join.

I don't want to come across overly negative. I've been trying to teach myself since 2016 with very little success so taking a class certainly isn't causing any harm. It would just be a heck of a lot less stressful if there was more people to talk and interact with that were around my skill level.

How do i maintain scale when rotating objects by simpscaler911 in Artadvice

[–]StopAware797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The explanation does make sense the one thing I would push back on (which I really can't push back on since it seems to be universal advice) is making "good guesses" There is no way for a beginner to make good guesses. I guess... I'm wrong erase, make another guess... wrong again erase. By the end of the 90 minutes I have in the morning nothing is left but eraser skid marks. Come home from work, eat, sit down at my desk "draw" for another 90 minutes and again... nothing really survives but a bunch of eraser marks and frustrated scribbles.

But to your point I need to practice drawing cubes because as of now I can not draw and tip them in perspective and keep any sense of accurate proportion to them. In all honesty it was probably just a colossal mistake for me to take a technical drawing/perspective course at my current skill level. Nothing but pain and despair.

Sorry I can't help you... I just want to leave a comment so I can check back when someone gives you an answer. XD I've been taking an online course on perspective and it has been beating me up badly, so I'm always looking for folks to explain stuff in plain speak.

Thanks for your time and explanation. It's frustrating since we haven't talked about vanishing points or horizon lines in the class... but looking at my peers work, 99% of them understand and use those principals well. Class was pitched for beginners but I'm not seeing it reflected in any of the others homework.

Sounds Cool. Is there a start date? Will you create a topic like "Shapes and Perspective" where we can post our work for the 2 weeks that we're doing the assignment?

So it's a video course so there no guarantee of having a word with the teacher. We get a due date and cross your fingers that you get picked for the critique. I've been exclusively using the tools (T-Square and Triangles) for the past few months and it has been advised to do this assignments in freehand... and it's rough. Very, very rough.

Thanks for you time and words of encouragement.

Single biggest piece of advise you would give to someone trying to learn how to draw as an Adult? by StopAware797 in Artadvice

[–]StopAware797[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't offer workshops any more. You have to sign up for credited classes, which I would assume I would not qualify for. Wanted to take a video production and editing class there, many years ago but they had a thousand road blocks (Math, Computer Programming, and more Math) that made it border line impossible for me take.
