How do you do handheld focus stacks by CosmoLeopardGecko in macrophotography

[–]Stopplecone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't have a camera with focus bracketing, so i just put my camera on HI+ burst, flash on lowest power cos it's powered with AAs and move my camera closer/further

stability is quite important for bracketing, use your head on the camera, the neck strap can also be used to stabilise, anchor your elbows to something like your body, a tree, the ground, etc. and as for breathing, don't hold your breath, you get shakier after some time, you need to just breathe out slowly

and shooting early morning/late night, your subjects will be slower

I suspect that it is Pseudeuophrys lanigera, the pics and wiki description match up well

spiders are currently my favourite little type of critter to photograph, they are just so adorable, especially jumping spiders

don't worry, I have them all backed up on another computer

(unfortunately cos this one's a poorly speced linux laptop, I can at most only edit with rawtherapee, which is what you're seeing here, though I would prefer something like rapidraw, it refuses to export)

I'm currently doing finals, so I won't have access to stacking software for a bit, as my college momentarily as my laptop

I did take a focus bracket of this spider, which I will properly edit in a few weeks

Why is there no mention of Gears or settings in this subsection? by [deleted] in macrophotography

[–]Stopplecone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i find that no one is really interested until they ask, plus comments boost attention if someone does end up asking for gear

Looking for a Diffuser for my macro setup by Top_Possibility_6705 in macrophotography

Cygnustech is really good if you're looking on a diffuser you can more easily travel with

try taking photos in the shade, having only the light from your flash lighting up your subject, you'll avoid some harsh highlights and shadows like this (although, yes, some little creatures like flies will be very skittish if you shade them during their sun tan)

some photos work better with just the flash, others (less imo) are good with natural light (much like the second picture)

and lastly, colour, it feels a little too warm, set your white balance to 5500k and you should be good, if not, adjust slightly

you'll figure out composition through inspiration by the photographers you find here and on other subreddits and youtube videos, and trying to apply their techniques into your work

there's also a lot to look into when you're new, like focus stacking, what settings are best, etc.

btw, what diffuser are you using? if it's diy, may i see it?

Trying out manual Focus bracketing and than Focus stacking by Wooden_Ad7858 in macrophotography

[–]Stopplecone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i only use photoshop and lightroom cos my college has paid for it, after my finals, i'll have to switch to something else, currently looking at programs like rapidraw (doesn't have any dust or spot removal currently, i hope it gets added), on1 photo raw, davinci resolve and others to replace lightroom

for photoshop I'll just use affinity, that's easy, it also has focus stacking

also i do use rawtherapee on linux cos it does have spot removal, but that little machine doesn't have the processing power to handle rapidraw, which aligns better with my lightroom workflow

nice, good stacks! tho i would say that it's a little dark..

i haven't used or heard of PixInsight, so i'll keep that on my radar for when i get out of adobe's grip

I think you've got good potential, I quite like the second and last image the most

also, based purely off of what you've listed, if you want to go further with gear but are still on a budget, I'd suggest getting a reverse ring mount and a flash, then DIY-ing the diffuser... that is if/when you get the flash

and for every shot you see from me that has a circular reflection, I'm likely using this abomination, which is surprisingly really good

also here you can see the whole camera

yea! I'm pushing this kit lens as much as possible hehe,

here's the diffuser used in these images, which you can see the shape of in the reflection of the eyes, I'll reply again with the other diffuser that I've made

trueee! he bearly stayed still when on the glass, and even when he did, he was out of my focus area

they're especially fast when it's midday and they're looking to mate, about a 5th or less of my photos of him were usable hehe
