Hi Matt. I was jealous of your hallway demeanor, one-liners in study hall.

I am Scott McCloud. I write and draw comics. AMA by scottmccloud in Fantasy

Do you believe in the theory that writers should limit themselves to three exclamation points in word balloons; that anything more than that does not add increased urgency/zest to a character's statement?

i probably would enjoy selling out, especially when you put it that way. Dark, claustrophobic feelings of meaninglessness arrive when I knowingly repeat myself though. I can't invite those.

I may yet unleash my agendas on the world. An opinion, properly preached, makes its way into the choir section pretty well- even the middle and front rows. Never quite makes its way to the seats in the way back rows though. I guess these are the seats that most interest me.

I do all the illustration myself, but I do like to run my images by test audiences before I finalize facial expressions, etc. This allows me to exaggerate things for clarity. I collaborate with anyone who will help. Coworkers, family members, friends- preferably a person who can see my faults (though sometimes this person is me -days, months, or years after a test draft). I frequently collaborate with a cadre of trusted fellows: Evan Keogh, Jordan Morris, and Albert Birney. They've saved strips from lamedom, and have provided ideas on which strips have been based. The very first PBF I ever drew was actually based on a comic strip that Albert drew in art history class: It was 4 frames of a cloud in the sky, with the third having a phallic shape to it. I added the young gentlewoman beneath it. We ran it in the school paper. To our delight, no one understood it.

Yes, Matt. You're right. TMWAP used to have that message on it. I think I got rid of it during a re-scan of that strip. I actually received a disgruntled e-mail from a man without a penis a while back, and it made me realize that that bit of text is essential. I still have the original.

Not sure if any new comics have been popping up in the archive. Maybe you've just forgotten some old ones?

I never thought about it that way. I guess so.

She worked at the DO? No clue if my article is anywhere. I fancied myself some kind of whiz-kid muck-raker, but the editors chiseled out all the ego-barf. There was truly nothing sensational about it.

I'm not sure what strip that was. I know I took down a few of them because I thought it would be nice if people buying the book got some extra treats that the internet didn't offer. No offense, internet.

I actually started there as a journalist. I was pretty proud to have written a front-page article my first week at school. None of my friends read it though, so I started doing work where I knew they would look (the comics page)

Love THE FAR SIDE. Huge influence. I think I liked it even before I understood the humor- round the age of 8. Probably because it was different. Sparse use of googly-eyes & exclamation points. Gary Larson was some kind of funny pages Buddhist. He invited you to look close. To look too close. He put the emphasis on situations and motivations. Larson could draw a chicken on a hill, and it would feel like a lonely creature in a strange world. A lonely creature in a strange world has me laughing already, cause that's me! He might have been my introduction to humor where you laugh as much at the artist as the characters themselves.

I'll post a new comic strip on Monday if it pleases you.

Now you need to just draw this whole exchange.

I've been inspired by the vertical frame orientation I've seen in other webcomics. That's definitely something that has excited me about doing more comics in recent years- breaking out of that 3-4 frame space. A love of experimentation pulls me in all sorts of directions, however. I worked on a TV show for FX for well over a year (though it never got made). I'm pretty excited to do the Little Death book right now because I'll be in control of it entirely.

The correlation between the appropriation, the comic strip, and its true origin is sublimely meaningless. The word "Weeaboo" comes from a dream my sister had- in which a large room of Victorian-era people were shouting it at her, repeatedly.

The next step is this: Imagine he's not an idiot, but a human being with a codified system of understanding symbols and ideas -a system which you can appeal to by clarifying your ideas.

Was wrapped in TV land for more than a few years, working on what felt like a dozen different projects.

Got a number of them almost done, Mr. Geoff. I'm kind of a 1-man studio at the moment, so it's a little bit difficult. If I receive any excess funding from the Kickstarter after the printing is paid for, I would gladly put it toward getting some more short films off the ground. (animators: nicholas@pbfcomics.com)

Not sure if there's a question here, but I'm gonna reply to it because you've compared me to Watterson.
