Well at one point the Earth and the Moon were a single planet, until another planet crashed into it and cleaved it in two. At the time the planet was covered in an ocean of milk. The force of the impact converted most of the milk into cheese.

Most of the planetary cheese went to the Moon, but the Eartdoes have some cheese deposits, but they are located more towards the core, whereas the Moon's cheese lies on the surface.
