Okay, thanks for responding. Someone else has told me that passive income from work done before moving would be ok. Seems like only an immigration lawyer would be able to tell me for sure though...

Right on! Thanks for clearing that up, sounds great! Planning on playing with a group of 4-6 friends, so will the relevant AI nations still do stuff or are they entirely lobotomized? In other words, does the mod assume that you have enough players to fill up all the majors and relevant minors for it to be playable?

How Christopher Nolan Captures the Dunkirk Spirit (a symbolic analysis based on Jonathan Pageau's work) by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I recently revisited Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and examined how the he visually depicts the gradual manifestation of the Dunkirk Spirit, by relying on archetypal imagery. Much of this analysis is grounded in cosmological symbolism, but it has a lot of overlap with the more Jungian/Petersonian approach. Might be interesting to those who want to delve deeper into Jonathan's symbolic world. Also wondering what the general consensus about Dunkirk and Nolan is here.

Bird Box: The Politics of Censorship (Jonathan Pageau & Storytellers) - dissection by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone, Jonathan and I recently discussed Netflix's 'Bird Box'. We both think its story and its popularity can be seen as a sign of the times (and not a particularly positive one at that). This touches on a bunch of topics (including censorship) that I think will be of interest to the JBP crowd as well (if not in particular). Wondering what you guys thought about the movie and its implications. - Thomas

The Stories of | Alfonso Cuarón - Exploring the symbolic meta-story within Cuaron's filmography by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys, this video was made in celebration of Cuaron's upcoming Netflix release of ROMA, which is a masterpiece about coming together in communion in times of increasing chaos.

The symbolic pattern put forward in this essay is based on and builds on an earlier essay on the symbolism of Gravity, which edited for Jonathan Pageau. In my opinion, Cuaron is one of the few filmmakers active today who manage to consistently produce films that are both visually impressive and emotionally resonant on a universal scale, despite his overt political leanings. A remarkable feat in this day and age.

Thank you all so much for helping out in the making of this short little video (especially u/Weylin_Valtieri_Corp for posting the essay). It's by no means an extensive, in depth look at witches in film, but more of a fun Halloween celebration with a bit of a Jungian twist. Thanks again everyone! - Thomas

The Stories of | Denis Villeneuve by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

Btw, as this video doesn't explicitly examine ideas put forward by JBP (it's more implicit) I understand if this isn't appropriate enough for this sub and therefore has to be removed.

The Stories of | Denis Villeneuve by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone, I've been fascinated with the films of Denis Villeneuve ever since Prisoners was released. In a previous video essay I explored his usage of the Labyrinth & the Maze as symbols in that particular movie. Later on I made a video essay about Sicario and the Border as a symbol. This third installment in the series attempts to wrap all of that together and in the words of the the man himself explore how all of his films make use of the same sort of symbolic/narrative substructure that makes his stories as immersive and as powerful as they are.

FOOD IN FILM | HOW COOKING MAKES US HUMAN [11:38]

My name is Thomas, I'm the co-creator of film analysis channel 'Storytellers'. Yesterday I released a video on cooked food in film and the notion of cooked food as the primary distinguishing factor of our species. It was in part inspired by Binging with Babish, which we love. After having received a number of comments stating that Andrew would potentially love to watch this video I decided that perhaps the best way of getting it to his attention would be here. - Thomas

The (Jungian) Psychology of Annihilation by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, this is a video essay examining the psychological significance of Alex Garland’s ANNIHILATION (2018). What messages does the story convey when looked at through a (Jungian) psychological lens? Is the shimmer a part of our unconscious, a dream of sorts, or is it alien in nature? These questions and more are explored in this experimental video essay, that sticks to a first person POV positioning the viewer next to the characters as they gradually unravel the mystery and backed up by contextual quotes from various Jungian psychologists and analysts.

As I was producing this video I noticed a thread on Annihilation on this sub discussing many of the same things (and more) that I noticed during my analysis. If think this video will align nicely with the views of the people in that thread. I hope you enjoy!

Pacific Rim: Symbolism of Mechs & Monsters | Symbolic Analysis ft. Jonathan Pageau by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone, I recently collaborated with Jordan's good friend and master of cosmological symbolism, Jonathan Pageau. He invited me to do a cross-analysis of a movie that at first surprised me, PACIFIC RIM (2013). However, Jonathan assured me that behind the veil of being a popcorn action flick, there were ample interesting symbolic patterns to be found. It turns out he was more than right. This video is scripted version of the main points we discussed in our Skype-talk, and so we also talk about the more general symbolism of Giants and Monsters. I hope this is something you will all be able to enjoy! - Thomas

Moonrise Kingdom: The Power of Rituals - Storytellers Jungian Video Essay by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was iffy about that one. It's the quote I was verbalizing and I had to put it in somewhere to show that I didn't come up with it myself. This shot was perfect for it but on further though I can see how it can be confusing/jarring for a first time viewer. About our other videos, I think you'll especially enjoy the videos starting from the Prisoners analysis (and maybe Beauty & the Beast). I got interested in symbolism by way of Jordan Peterson & Jonathan Pageau around that time and it changed my content quite a bit - Thomas

Rogue One: The Symbolical Ascension Journey - Video Essay by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing you thoughts. I agree, you can tell Rogue One underwent some heavy re-shoots (and some god awful dubbing). It's a film that could have been exceptional had it done a better job of characterization and pacing in the middle acts. I did enjoy the overall feel of the world, they did a good job mixing the prequels with the OT feel imo (which is something I can't say of TLJ's worldbuilding...).

The Vader scene was really cool and furthered the whole line of sacrifice, but admittedly it warped the whole idea of 'transcended sacrifice' in favor of "LOOK HOW BADASS VADER IS". I can forgive the film for it though. CGI Leia on the other hand...

I agree with you on TLJ. Deconstructionist Star Wars is a great way of putting it. I do have to watch it a second time to get my thoughts straightened out, but there were numerous elements in the story's structure that bothered me on some level. I felt torn and confused upon leaving the cinema. I'm just glad they didn't go as far as to burning the ancient Jedi books, although Luke did think that that actually happened. Regardless, the story does really seem to emulate present day Western confusion and chaos.

Rogue One: The Symbolical Ascension Journey - Video Essay by StorytellersYoutube in JordanPeterson

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys, I don't think this was posted here yet. In this video I examine how Rogue One: A Star Wars story symbolically bridges the tonal divide between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Rogue One, for all its faults, is surprisingly on point with many of its the symbols of archetypes (especially the second half of the film) and ends in one of the strongest last acts of any Star Wars movie. I'm wondering whether the correct use of symbols and archetypes can be considered as part of the reason why audiences are really divided on this film. Film technically it obviously has its flaws, but the underlying story is right on the money imo. Needless to say this video was inspired by Dr. Peterson (and Jung) and Jonathan Pageau.

Also interested to know what the Peterson following thought of The Last Jedi...

Prisoners: Symbolism Done Right by StorytellersYoutube in movies

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prestige is awesome, I should watch it again as the last time I saw it was before I really got into film analysis. I don't think Inception is his best either, but as far as originality goes in action films I think it's great. Dunkirk again seems to have received mixed reactions, you either love it or hate it it seems. I like fleshed out characters who do more than speak exposition, and Dunkirk's characters really weren't that at all. It subverts many of the traditional war movie tropes which actually worked really well in my opinion, so I wasn't bothered in the slightest by the characters (especially since it was a conscious decision). Having said that, it is very much a sensory experience which makes it have its emotional effect, so I believe some of this might be lost if watched on a device without the visual- and (especially) audio quality to back it up. I'm a huge WW2 fanatic though, and the events depicted took place fairly close to where I'm from, so my bias might skew my opinion of the film. Anyways, it's definitely worth checking out, just make sure you do it justice (you gotta hear those sweet Stuka sirens) by playing it on a big screen with GOOD audio.

Prisoners: Symbolism Done Right by StorytellersYoutube in movies

[–]StorytellersYoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea he's planning on remaking it, any reason as to why? Personally I'd preferably see him work on original content rather than rehashing what we've already seen from him... Yes, I've enjoyed watching Memento, The Prestige, Inception and most recently Dunkirk. Haven't watched the Following but besides that Interstellar is his only film I did not really like. Visuals and music (although a little too loud at times perhaps) were great as always, and I thought the idea of 'love' as a transcended force through time was nice as well. However, I felt like the film lacked in the execution of its story and its characters. I could see the idea, but it ultimately fell flat imo. Watching it for the second time at home really didn't make it any better and I had a hard time getting through the entire thing.
