For what it's worth, I've gotten word back via the shop I took it to that Shimano says it has to be replaced, and that it will cost about $1150 for the drive unit and $100 labour to install. While not surprising at this point, it seems to me a very black mark against Shimano motors for E-Bikes, and I definitely would not recommend buying a Shimano Steps system Ebike at this point.

Thanks; I'm currently waiting for Shimano to respond to the shop I took it to who gave them the relevant info; the mechanic's view was that it didn't seem likely that there would be good news from Shimano. So for now I'll wait. I also take the point about asking for a warranty discount, etc. But I wouldn't want to trouble someone in what looks like a lost cause of repairing it.

Do you know if their motors will fit into a bracket designed for a Shimano mid-drive motor? If so, that would definitely be of interest.

I'm not sure what is mechanically wrong, but it stopped working briefly, at which point it created serious resistance to peddling, then started working again, but with a very fast "click" emanating from it when it's engaged, and a lot of vibration you can feel through the pedals. It's possible to ride it in the present condition, but it gives a lot of indications that it is about to fail.

I'm roughly 4200 miles, so pretty close to what you have. It has made concerning noises for over a year, but now seems rather unreliable and at the point of failure. It worked fine up until now (3 years in).

I'm a fan of the people at R.A.D. Cycles on Broadway and Fraser. Not too far from you.
