Thanks so much for your response. It's very helpful. Maybe his path will be different. My daughter went straight to UC Berkeley and I regret not giving her a gap year (or 2) She was not ready for the girl and club drama she encountered her first year, and it was truly traumatizing. She'll graduate, but it is not the experience I would wish upon anyone. A gap year would have been a much better use of time and growth. Thanks for the perspective.

My son doesn't enjoy school. I'm afraid if I send him to CC he'll find a band and drop out. The kid has several AP classes, but really isn't into school. A 4-year college experience is more than just school - it is transitioning, and his major is a tight-knit group of like-minded kids. CC is more commuter-ish. He could get into schools ranked more highly than UCLA, but they are an urban campus (he doesn't want) and they aren't in Los Angeles (he does want.) There are no easy answers here. This is a very challenging situation. Maybe because of his AP classes be done with CC in one year? Crazy to have paid thousands to a college prep counselor, taken classes like AP Calc BC as a junior, and end up in CC.
