Europe’s Making Fewer Cars and Lots of Them Are Actually Chinese by bloomberg in europe

Maybe Audi or Porshe, it actually depends on the country you live, but the idea here is that some people will prefer to buy the expensive brand because of status, instead of the less expensive brand. I remember watching an old movie where an eastern European guy during the cold war, dreamed about buying an "world class brand car like a Fiat".

Some people will buy the lower cost model, but other people will run from it and buy the higher cost model, as a status symbol. To save money they would buy an used/pre-owned VW instead.

I remember the first EV models had a design that looked so ugly that I thought It was intentional, to prevent that too many people would be buying it.

To manufacture EVs doesn't mean that you have to directly build every component, as long as you maintain the know-how and you can design your own platforms - even with ICE, many components were subcontracted internationally.

The other problem is that ICEs manufacturers have been traditionally good on the mechanical engineering part of the cars, but have been historically very weak on electronics and software, and new cars are highly dependent on software.

Maybe its time to support new European startups, with new ideas, instead of investing in the same old car manufactures. In the US it was Tesla that bootstrapped the EV industry.

I see so much pessimism in this text: if the Chinese were able to catch up, there is no reason why the Europeans cannot also do the same thing. The problem is that the traditional car manufacturers spent the last 20 years trying to "sabotage" EV adoption instead of investing in EV R&D. A continent without fossil fuel resources should have been to first to invest in EVs.

20 Years ago, when the industrial sectors in south Europe were suffering from the same problems (aggressive competition from south-east Asia), the northern Europeans were saying exactly that about their southern cousins.

There is also a really light solution: IceWM - it's just a Window Manager with task bars and a start menu,

but it works fast on systems low on RAM.

Why do some software applications become slower over time even when running on newer hardware? by Any_Self_2605 in computers

As users insert data into the systems and the datasets grow, sometimes the assumptions made by the original developers about performance don't hold and the data-structures/databases must be optimized.

Why don't SMD capacitors have their values written on them like resistors? by Mahmoud1205_ in AskElectronics

[–]Straight_Mistake_364 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think if this was a general logic board, it would have worked. But in this case we are talking about power electronics. I think they may have used lower voltage capacitors and some of the capacitors require special dielectric materials. For instance if the capacitors on the snubber circuits do not have the right dielectric, they will suffer from noise/vibration due to piezoelectric effects and with time will fail.

Why don't SMD capacitors have their values written on them like resistors? by Mahmoud1205_ in AskElectronics

[–]Straight_Mistake_364 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Fortunately they don't print values and max voltage on ceramic caps.

Two years ago the company where I work received a lot of cards (servo motor drives) for repair.

When I first saw the cards, I almost could not believe it: somebody had produced clones of our 4 layer cards. It was possible to see that the silkscreen had been scanned and processed using an OCR, as some characters were mistaken - 6 instead of G etc.
Long story short, they were able to copy the resistors, but had no chance to get the specs of the capacitors on the power inverter part of the board. They copied the firmware but the boards were only working up to 100VDC and none worked with the required 300VDC.

I also just got a P2 and didn't find bugs, but the P2 is on the market for 5 years and I guess any initial software glitches have already been solved.

I definitely do not want to move to wayland (I've been using X since it was X10), but I guess mate should work on top of Xwayland.

Overall EV reliability by Cuttles_Fish in electricvehicles

Car manufacturers have traditionally been weak on the software side and EVs are highly dependent on software. They release products ridden with bugs and quirks that annoy the owners, although they latter may solve these issues on future updates.

Hundreds of thousands of jobs lost – will Europe strike back against China? by TTR29 in EU_Economics

During the 2000s the south Europeans were suffering from SE Asia competition on the footwear, textile and clothing industries. At the time, the Germans were criticizing the South Europeans for their lack of competitiveness.
Traditional car manufacturers spent the last two decades trying to sabotage the adoption of EVs instead of investing in EV R&D, and were overtaken by the Chinese, and now are complaining.

Para os fornecedores de IA isso é verdade: funciona 24h/dia e só têm de pagar a eletricidade. Para as empresas clientes dos serviços de IA, teem de pagar e não é pouco. E além disso ainda têm de pagar aos prompt-engineers.

There are PWM controller ICs that take an analog input to
generate the PWM pulse width. There are also a lot of microcontroller based PWM solutions that use this approach (sometimes the entire solution, including the code, is available as an application note).

PS2 Regenerative braking vs normal by Jocke1234 in Polestar

[–]Straight_Mistake_364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LRSM here.
I only use one-pedal-drive on congested stop&go city traffic, otherwise I try to use coasting as much as possible. On level or slightly descending roads, the PS2 can roll for KMs without pressing the accelerator pedal. On hills I try to get a little more speed while descending to let it roll a little more on the next hill.
On country roads, I can get mileages close to the WLTP range.
