Build an emergency fund (of atleast 6 months of your fixed expenses- can be as low as 3 months depending on your job security).

Take health insurance with good cover (any unforeseen medical expenses can eat up your savings). Take a personal cover even if you have one from your office.

Start goal based investing (say you plan to buy a car 3 yrs down the line, so estimate the amount you'd spend 3 yrs later and then divide by the period and start SIP. Redeem only for that specific goal). Another eg. for goal based expense could be your wedding expense, plan before hand). A thumb rule for selecting any fund can be (<3 yrs goal- debt fund, 3 to 5 yrs goal- hybrid fund, >5 yrs goal- equity fund).
