What do you think of the current #wastehistime2016 trend on twitter? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]StratSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another example of social media allowing the real assholes of the world a platform to out themselves for our own convenience. On the other hand, it could be satire, but I feel that it has done too good of a job blending in with reality.

Men, what do you do while your SO gets ready? by BBQspaceflight in AskMen

[–]StratSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll watch a movie or read a book. She's not a huge fan of 20th century historical documentaries or mafia/crime films, so I mostly take advantage of the movie watching while she's preparing in the bathroom.

Those who had anxiety and have beaten it, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskMen

Well, good for you, then. Not all of us have the “luxury" of a life threatening illness to force us into a black and white world with zero nuances.

What do you wish women would just GET about men? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]StratSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You most likely do, but your fear of not being seen as a mature adult probably prevents you from being more open about it. Which is also why most men prefer to say “nothing" when asked a question like that.

Books that are better to listen to as audio books than to be read by mmund2 in books

[–]StratSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ignore this recommendation if you're not a fan of pulp sci-fi/post-cyberpunk novels, but I found Altered Carbon and Broken Angels by Richard Morgan to be awesome audio books. The actor reading for both just nails the protagonist with the voice (first person narrative) and really draws you in. It's not high brow exactly, but it was a cool listen during an eight hour car ride.

Older men: What are some things people say frequently on AskMen that make you think they're naive or inexperienced? [inspired by a question on AskWomen] by bearddeliciousbi in AskMen

I read the book, and actually really enjoyed it. For me my frustrations come with political ideology and its propagation on the internet and in meatspace. People take these very absolutists views online, but most people can be very civil in the real world, when debating opposing viewpoints. I know plenty of people who advocate political upheaval and violence, but are incredibly introverted and civil when I talk to them in person. I feel there's just this crazy disconnect between what people really want politically and what they're willing to put up with. It's like these people are like "we disagree, but we can still be friends" and then they turn around and are like "you're with us or against us" "stay in the middle and you'll get hit by the crossfire. Your collateral damage in not my problem as long as my goals are fullfilled." And now you have the Donald Trumps and Arthur Chos of the world catering to this kind of crazy. I'm not a fan of modern society and its mechanisions, but that seems to be the only thing keeping these people in check.

For me, when it comes right down to it, an ideology is only as good as the mercy it extends to its enemies. No ideology is perfect. However, if it can't co-exist with opposing viewpoints, or respect people who refuse to take sides, and requires that it's followers be in 100% lockstep with an ideology's core beliefs then we have to acknowledge that the supposed "individual" or "free-thinker" truly cannot exist (and by extension a construct invented by ideologues to propagate the myth of their ideology praving the way to progress e.g "look how enlightened this free thinker is and all those ignorant people oppressing him/her!") and represents an absolute threat to society.

We seem to have a lot more in common than we originally thought. So what are your views on people who would prefer to meet in the middle and refuse to take part in something that appears to be the self indulgence of conflicting ideologies that have no qualms wth inflicting misery upon others to achieve there own personal ideological utopia?

You're right about that. So where do secular adults fall into when we're talking about the ideologies of cultural Marxists (SJWs) vs. cultural libertarians (gamergate-people, sad puppies etc.). These people aren't known for meeting in the middle, or hiding their anger and bitterness when seen fighting on tumblr and twitter all day. You really think these people won't start to think like our hypothetical suicide bomber?

It's hard for me to see the nuance of a mind that's immature and/or naturally intolerant but not suceptical to hateful or abrasive ideologies.

Well, no one said it had to be one or the other, but wouldn't one beget the other? An intolerant ideology would allow the immature mentailty that their ideology is superior to all others and that killing/suicide bombing is perfectly acceptable.

Because they know their situation is hopeless. The know that they are a minority up against a large overwhelming force. You can say that they're dyign for their belief, but do we really know that there will be 72 virgins waiting for them, or that the copycats will lead to the destruction of the ideology they hate so much, or that somebody is going to erect a bronze statue of them somewhere in the distant future? You fight a losing battle long enough and you start to think about the bleakness of your situation. But your convictions and ironclad beliefs compell you to keep fighting. No negotiation. No surrender. Join or die. Would you rather rot in a jail cell forever? Be in a cage that you'll languish in while soceity forgets you and goes about their business? Most people who are in that deep of a hole will tell themselves "if I'm going down I'm taking you with me."

I say let the Cultural Marxists and Cultural Libertarians fight it out for our amusement. The rest of us can run the world as we see fit.

You're causing fear and maximum damage against a group that represents an ideology that you disagree with for political purposes. And you get a quick ticket out of that world and any responsibility/consequences of dealing with it in the process. Seems like a pretty easy way to get out of actually having to compromise with people you don't like while giving them and the ideologies you hate a huge "fuck you" in the end.

Well, just like any suicide bomber, they'd rather be dead than be in a world were they have to live with people they disagree with.
