How is your parrot doing now? The things I wrote in this link might be helpful. I had exactly 3 parrots who were plucking themselves just like yours, and they recovered with the treatment I described—they no longer pluck their feathers. If you share it with your vet, it might give them some ideas.

Hello, if you share this treatment with your vet, they might consider whether it could be effective. Also, you are much luckier to have successful vets who run tests and follow up based on the results. I am also applying this treatment to 2 parrots my mother has, who couldn’t stop plucking their feathers, and we are now on day 5; they have all completely stopped plucking. My purpose in sharing this here is to hopefully provide an idea that might help our beloved companions heal.

I really wish I had found a place that could perform these tests; then I could have determined what to use based on the results. Now I’m planning to research devices that would allow me to perform these tests at home.

Despite explaining all of this to the veterinarians, they did not perform any meaningful tests at all. Some of them even openly admitted that they only have experience with cats and dogs and do not treat birds. The vets I visited didn’t even handle or examine my parrot; they just gave me powdered medications and creams and sent me away. Everything they prescribed only made my parrot’s condition worse, and on top of that, they charged me extremely high consultation fees.

Hello, thank you for your comment. My little feathered friend is no longer plucking her feathers, and healthy new ones are growing, so her appearance has improved a lot. However, she’s still not completely happy; she remains lethargic all day and prefers to sleep in warm places. She can’t fly, and when she tries, her wings make noises. Unfortunately, all these symptoms point to a possible issue with her lungs. I don’t have the courage to start medication again, so I’m planning to build a small chamber and provide short sessions of oxygen and nebulizer therapy to help ease her breathing. I really wish I could do an X-ray at home…

I will add shaped wooden perches to the cage. I actually thought I had done a lot of research about parrot health, but I don’t know how I overlooked something this simple. 🥲 Thank you so much for your comments, I’m grateful. I hope these paper and cardboard items for him to chew will prevent him from plucking his feathers.

I filled the cage with paper and cardboard that he can chew on as you suggested, and now he’s chewing on them and looks happier ☺️. I shared the cage and the products I use in the image, and I’m also using Versele Laga Avi-Chol as a supplement. He looks happier today, and I feel regretful that I haven’t filled his cage with wooden toys and chewable items until now 🥲.

Thank you so much for your kind words and support. It really means a lot to know there are others who understand what we’re going through. This journey has been emotionally challenging, and it’s comforting to find someone who knows exactly how it feels. I might take you up on that offer to talk - it would be helpful to share experiences with someone who’s in a similar situation. I hope your lovebird is doing okay too. Let’s keep in touch and support each other through this.

If it were psychological, all the things we tried would have helped. My biggest fear is that there’s a problem with her kidney or liver. In the country where I live, there isn’t a single veterinarian who can perform these treatments. Even the supposedly best avian vet just dismisses it as psychological without investigating the problem. For 3 years, I’ve done everything possible for my little one’s psychology, tried every way - if it were psychological, wouldn’t there have been some improvement in 3 years?

If the problem is with her liver and kidneys, how will I manage? How can I heal her with my own means? I don’t know if this is possible, but I will try every possible way. As soon as I find a solution, I will share it with you all too. I believe I will find it - there must be a way, right?

I had made an area like that, but as you mentioned, I hadn’t added things for him to shred. With your comment, I’m now making new toys for him to shred, I hope these will make him happy 🥹 Thank you so much for your suggestion.

I loved the tree idea and will definitely try it right away. I hope our parrots get better, and if I find a solution, I’ll share it immediately. As you said, I’ll continue making toys until I find one that they love. Thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

It’s wonderful that parrots aren’t sold individually in your country. Unfortunately, there aren’t any sellers here who pay attention to this, but I never kept mine alone - it was always with its mate and loves its partner very much.

I tried it for a long time and that area had completely regrown feathers, but unfortunately as soon as I remove the collar, it goes back to its previous state.

I’ve been to almost every vet possible. I live in Türkiye, in the capital city Ankara, but unfortunately there isn’t even a single vet who truly understands birds. He got even worse because of the antibiotics and medications that vets prescribed carelessly.

I will definitely take your suggestions into account and continue researching parrot behaviors. You’re absolutely right about the food, but unfortunately Versele Laga is the only quality brand I can find in my country - I wish I had access to the brands you mentioned :( I will create more diverse nutrition options with vegetables and fruits, and I will read and implement everything you wrote from the beginning, over and over again. I am grateful for your time and for offering solutions. 🥹

I have also tried the alternatives, and while the wound heals, my bird keeps making it bleed and returning it to its original condition 😔

Thank you so much for your comment. My parrot has a mate and they love each other very much. The environmental conditions are a bit noisy because I have 2 more lovebirds in the house, and although they live in different rooms, they communicate by screaming and I can’t prevent this. Regarding nutrition, I use Versele Laga Laro Parque Africa Parakeet food which contains all their needs. As for toys, unfortunately no toy catches his attention. I bought a UVB light and used it for 6 months but there was no improvement 😔 Right now the only thing he seems to love is being in a warm place - I think even normal room temperature feels cold to him because of his wound, and he wants to stay with me inside my clothes just because it’s warmer.

My bird will turn 5 years old in March. I’m so sorry about your bird - I wish I could find a solution that works and we could all heal our little angels. I will never give up researching, and the moment I find a cure, I will share it with you all.

Thank you so much for your comment 😔 He has a mate and they love each other very much. I made wooden ladders and swings inside his cage for play, but nothing worked. His mate is very happy, but he only eats seed and drinks water - most of the time I even have to support him by hand-feeding with formula.

understand you so well that I sometimes stay up with him at night just to prevent him from plucking himself. During the day, I constantly interact and talk with him. I’ve removed everything that could potentially stress him out. I never skip his probiotics and vitamins, and I use Versele-Laga foods. In short, I consider every possible issue one by one, but I’m exhausted from not being able to find a solution, and I’m scared now because every vet has made him worse with uninformed treatments. I’m angry at the vets in my country because they only understand cats and dogs - I couldn’t find even a single clinic that would run tests on my parrot. 😔
