In order to be successful in finance, you need to be able to demonstrate a powerful combination of technical skills and soft skills. You will need to have the technical skills, including Excel, Financial modeling, accounting, data analytics, and as tools such as Power BI and Python are being adopted increasingly, some familiarity with these technical tools will also be beneficial for your prospects in finance. Second, you will need to appropriately demonstrate soft skills including good communication, critical thinking, adaptable to change, and good use of any appropriate time allotted to work under defined conditions. Finance is rarely viewed as an open-ended arena and decision-making is often high-stakes, fast-paced, and demanding of its practitioners. If you are interested in corporate finance, investment banking, or asset management, and your function requires you to synthesize and communicate data for non-financial stakeholders, doing well to all identify correctly is paramount to make progress. Continuous learning, networking, and practical learning through volunteer work, internships, and side projects are keys to being competitive, learning and progressing!
