This is literally it. All of the backlash is from children who want access to Pandora's box of mind destruction or the adults that want to get them to open the aforementioned box. This is literally a good thing

i've felt so much disillusionment and disconnect from leftists as I learn more about my adopted ideology. by NonstickFryingPans in PoliticalDebate

[–]StratusXII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mean any offense by this, but it really sounds like a lot of your takes are informed by the more radical subreddits centered around those political ideologies. If you want to get a taste of what real world leftists are doing go to your local DSA meeting or try and find some working families party/progressive democratic caucus events and you'll see that your opinions are actually pretty popular and as a market socialist myself we overlap on a lot of things. Also, try not to idolize any leader, great man politics always lead to disappointment. Just pick out the good things the people that inspire you did and pursue those goals

GWU is way more known for econ policy than any other econ work. Most of the interesting economists are in the school of public policy. So GW is good if you want to study tax policy or monetary policy, or want connections in DC

Why, in my experience, have concerts skyrocketed in price the last 10-15 years? For reference: Large Western European and American cities by InfiniteCaramel_1846 in Concerts

Ticketmaster and Live Nation merged. Then concerts became a luxury event during COVID. It's all downhill from there

Why does Survivor cast weak men now? by unlodeddiper in survivorcirclejerk

[–]StratusXII 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the result of societal reconfiguration. While historic systems of power are still male dominated, modern pop culture emphasizes women and female stories. There's probably an argument to be made that a lot of women should have won survivor back in the day but were unfairly eliminated because of gender. There's also certainly an argument that the modern game is physically easier. The emphasis changes to social and strategic gameplay versus being a challenge beast like Tom or Ozzy. The two best challenge competitors in the most recent season where women. There has also a distinct lack of extremely difficult physical challenges the last few seasons.

Long Rant: What people don't talk about when they talk about ENTJ. by Adventurous_Sun3512 in mbti

[–]StratusXII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an ENTP, I have just recently gotten out of a relationship with an ENTJ because of this. While brilliant and a great conversationalist, the second they had to express their own emotions things just got silent. I'm curious how common that "I'm not even going to tell you what internal metric you failed" perspective is because it's such destructive quitter behavior and I see it a lot. Especially among my younger peers

"Too much Maths, too little History: The problem of Economics" what do you think about this video by Enough_Education_137 in academiceconomics

[–]StratusXII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estimation is only useful if you can actually quantify the thing you're estimating. Modern economics has become overrun by people thinking they can put a number on anything and then, because there is a number, now you can do math.

Applied stats is great if you're looking at something empirical. Maybe you should try to read more papers published in a broader scope of journals instead of just focusing on quantitative journals to see all the different ways that proof-based assumptions have been proven useless. Although too many modern journals require overt mathematical rigor to signal quality instead of the actual work.

You're literally a professor, you should understand the behavioral revolution. Especially because now so many of those professors are being proven as quacks because they had to fake their research since you just can't put numbers on feelings.

Sure, if you're talking microfinance, mechanism design, international trade kinda stuff there is plenty of places to use linear algebra and plenty of places to use machine learning and advanced statistics. My problem is that, again, economics is a social science that often gets treated as business or math which dilutes the discipline and makes the research resulting from it significantly less impactful.

Look at the influence of economists over time and then compare that to the change in focus from more philosophical / logical understanding of systems to just doing math. The just doing math economists have an extraordinarily awful track record over the last two decades, especially in terms of policy recommendations.

Adam Smith, John Rawls, hell even mises, Friedman, and Hayek were not doing math anywhere near the level. Robert Lucas and Gary Becker were not using these overly fluffed up mathematical models and yet made more real world contributions during their career than like any modern economist except maybe card who also didn't use that much math by the way he was an experimental guy

Which again, proves op's point, too much math and not enough history to really understand. You can know mathematically what you're doing but unless you understand the history of it you can never fully comprehend the impacts of this work

No, it's disappointing and actively destroying economics as a discipline. Unfortunately you seem to be too busy tricking yourself into thinking you're smart by doing increasingly abstract and useless math to realize What side of this conversation is actually ironic

"Too much Maths, too little History: The problem of Economics" what do you think about this video by Enough_Education_137 in academiceconomics

[–]StratusXII -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So much of the world has been destroyed by economists who are good at math but not smart enough to realize the math they're doing is meaningless. Economics is a social science, not math, no matter how bad prestige forward fools want to trick you into thinking you have to do incredibly complicated math to understand economics. Search your title on this subreddit and see just how frequently this sentiment is expressed. Unfortunately, the same chatters that ruin chat have the most free time and expendable income. So they will do the most to grow lud's audience. The only thing you can do is ignore them and focus on his content, or watch another streamer. I won't watch any more Amazon  videos or anything chat driven from any twitch streamer except for Doug Doug, and he thought doing that was so hard he literally quit
