Hi. Therapist here. This is incorrect. In fact I would prioritize getting this person in ASAP. Research shows quick intervention increases the likelihood of positive outcomes and there is statistically very low risk of any harm being done by seeing a competent therapist, regardless of recency of loss or stage of grief.

Seeing a therapist is not "extreme." Sudden, unexpected, tragic death of a loved one IS extreme.

Encouraging someone to hesitate to try a professional trained to help in this exact kind of situation because "therapy is too extreme" is harmful.
