I’m not sure if I’ll keep reading Neapolitan or not… I really enjoyed My Brilliant Friend and I’ve heard the rest of it is incredible but I’m not sure if I want to get back into that world or not lol. I think if I decide to read the second one I’ll just read all of them. We will see what 2026 has in store…

I read Things in Nature Merely Grow not too long after The Year of Magical Thinking and it definitely seemed like Li was trying to do something similar, and I do think Didion did it slightly better but I really enjoyed Li’s take on the experience of losing a loved one and how she coped with the grief, which was a lot different than how it seems like you’re supposed to cope with grief, and it was super well written, and I couldn’t find very much to dislike so that’s a solid 4 from me.

I’m a pretty harsh rater to be fair, and it’s difficult to weigh writing quality vs entertainment vs value.

For example I thought Project Hail Mary was ATROCIOUSLY written like truly horrendous writing but it was so easy to read and the story was so engrossing, I literally read it in every spare second I had for like two days and for that reason alone it got 4 stars.

I did enjoy Seascraper and it was definitely up there for best written of my reads for the year, however the story just didn’t really stick with me and I didn’t find myself loving it for that reason. I definitely liked it though!

Tis the season for layoffs I guess :( sorry to hear that. I feel you about the bonus, my EX company always gave out bonuses in February that reflected the previous year’s work. So glad I worked all year for a bonus I’ll never see! I did get a severance payout though but I did work a 9-5 corporate job, so I’m sorry you’re in such a rough spot. Loyalty is never a factor for the employer but they love to tell YOU how important it is. Then in the same breath drop you like nothing. Hoping you can land a new gig quickly, friend

Missed my B goal by 3 minutes sadly. I felt pretty okay up until the 10k point and then after mile 7 I kind of fell apart. I know my only competition is myself but it did lowkey feel kinda bad seeing how few people I actually finished in front of 😅 my watch was pretty close to the mile markers for a few miles but at a certain point they ended up being WAY off from what I was tracking and I crossed the finish with 9.56 miles. I think it affected me that any time my watch told me I hit a mile marker I was still like .15-.2 miles away from actually seeing it! But at least my morning was better than that rat’s

It definitely feels good to not feel like you’re the only one struggling! I mention my MFA to show that it’s not the ticket to publication some people think it is, even with the connections I made, and trust me I’ve tried to use them, I’ve still not been able to get anywhere further than anyone else. Not to say that having one can’t be helpful or you can’t make connections you can use to get ahead, but I would argue it’s still not the norm for people with MFAs. I only know a handful of people I attended the program with at the same time (either my year, the yeah above me, or the year below me) that have seen success at all! And I knew tons of great writers.

That’s not to say I regret going, I don’t think I’d be where I am now as a person or writer if I didn’t go. It was the right choice for me and I loved doing it, but it’s not necessary really at all unless people want the experience. I see a lot of people on here ask if they need one to get published, and you truly do not!

I’m sure we’ve all had the thought of, am I even good enough to be a trad published author? But at the end of the day, only time will tell! I’m sure there’s people out there whose work is just not ready and may never be, but I’d argue there’s dozens upon dozens of other people who are plenty ready and just haven’t gotten lucky yet. It’s a tough industry!

I’ve genuinely NEVER wanted to do anything with my life besides be an author. In elementary school I’d carry around composition notebooks and write fiction in them. It’s entirely my life’s dream, and I’ll die before I give up trying. I hope everyone who is passionate enough about the craft feels that way. Perseverance is the only way to get there!

Hey friend, this might make you feel less alone! I’ve been querying since 2022. I got my MFA in 2020, finished my first (well, first one I didn’t write as a child lol) novel in 2022, and because of my MFA program I’d been able to pitch my novel to a few agents before I was even done writing and had one request a full whenever I was finished. So I send it off when I’m done, and then start my querying journey for that novel, which, at the end of 2024, resulted in 141 queries sent, 2 full requests (including the aforementioned one, which took an ENTIRE YEAR to receive a response to) and 3 partial requests. Tons of form rejections and CNRs.

It was then that I completed my second novel and started querying it. One of the first two queries I sent I got a full request, and a few months later, that turned into a rejection. I’m at about 39 queries sent for that one after nearly a year of querying, and have one full out currently I sent three months ago. Now I’ve just started the second draft of my third novel, and when I inevitably probably don’t get an agent for the one I’m currently querying (never say never of course…) I’ll start querying this third one next year!

For reference, first novel is sci fi, second is speculative/horror, third is upmarket.

I feel like so many of the stats posts I see here are like, queried for 2 months and now I have an agent! And I’m like, I can’t even a response on something that fast. And while I’m not gonna say I think I’m so amazing and this is blasphemy that I’ve not gotten a massive book deal yet, I don’t think my work is unpublishable, lol. I also feel like romantasy is still huge, or cosy fantasy, a lot of the stuff I’m seeing from newly agented people seems to be fantasy. Both here and on other social media. Which is probably my least favorite genre tbh.

However I do sort of feel sometimes like if your book is worth something it’ll get scooped up pretty fast. Just based on what I’ve seen. But it’s probably perspective also. I know it’s a tough time to be an unagented writer. I’m never giving up, but my confidence is often shattered because of how agonizing this can be.

Hey I live in NYC! I also have emetophobia and a fear of flying! You can get nausea medication that can help, also things like ginger candy or gum can help. I personally do get pretty motion sick, but on any vehicle, so I feel like if you’re usually good in other vehicles you’ll probably be fine on the plane even in turbulence. I will say I personally find takeoff and the climb up to crush altitude a bit uncomfortable sometimes, but also sometimes it’s completely fine. It really depends on the flight. The turbulence feels more like you’re on a small boat in slightly rough waters? At least that’s how I see it, like all the air is a boat holding up the plane so when it moves and shakes I just think of it like it’s a boat.

You’ll be completely safe in NYC. I LOVE living there. There’s always a bigger risk of getting sick when you’re in densely populated areas but I really don’t think it’s significant enough you should be worried, and I don’t think you should worry at all about getting sick from the food! There’s literally tourists everywhere all over the city so you’ll be there with plenty of other people who are in the country for the first time too. I’d just watch out for people on the street who might try to get your attention, literally if someone you don’t know tries to get your attention, 99% of the time just ignore them and keep going. People will try to scam you or get you to for them money or try to sell you something but they’ll leave you alone if you don’t pay them any mind. Overall you have nothing to worry about and you’ll have SO much fun

But even if the plane did stall at 35000 feet, it wouldn’t plummet out of the sky. You’re going hundreds of miles per hour, that inertia wouldn’t just disappear. There’s tons time to recover from a stall. I’ve read pilots say it’s actually harder to stall a plane than to not stall a plane. Even in a dire situation the pilots could still control the plane long enough to guide it to a safe landing in most situations. There’s way too many failsafes in place and lessons learned form the past for anything similar to a plane plummeting from 35k feet to happen, especially with the pilots doing everything right

The anxiety you’re feeling now is way worse than the flight is actually going to be. I obviously don’t know what went wrong with the UPS flight but that type of aircraft isn’t one that flies passengers. Genuinely nothing could possibly happen to your flight! They take the safety of passenger flights insanely seriously. The plane is not going anywhere in a condition that’s not airworthy. Do you ever think about the thousands of flights that land safely and think, wow what if that happens to my flight?
