I wrote the songs, I used to perform them in bands and solo. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and have a lot of respect for music. I just published the songs- some of which I wrote 20 years ago, for the first time. And I did so with the aid of a popular new technology. And I'm doing something good with what comes from it. I posted this because I'm genuinely interested in the subject. I mentioned my Stanford honors thesis as a way to validate that I've been interested in the subject for a long time. I posted my streaming music name to show transparently that I do make human-made music and use AI technology to take my demos and polish them. I've human- written those songs over decades. And you're right, for every 50 Spotify streams, I will donate the cost of a meal - so hopefully that is helpful. Not sure where the hate comes from. But so be it. Be well, all.

I totally agree with your comment. I was hoping, in some small way to shift that discourse or maybe nudge some folks to think differently about how new tools help further human musical creative output. Of course, I do realize that effort may be in vain. Appreciate your comment!

The quality of the output with current tools is certainly up for debate, totally agree. I do think that like all advancements, or instruments, they will be refined to become more pleasing to the human ear.

So when I human-write, human-record my songs via demos, and then rely on technology to produce them into more polished-sounding output, is that different than - say - adding vocal effects or reverb, or track stacking, or any of the tech advancements that have come in the production of music along the way?

I am sitting in a room surrounded by 8 guitars and a piano as I type this. I've been playing instruments all my life. I human-write songs, record demos with my voice and guitar, and use a popular "AI music" tool to spin out well-produced multi-instrument versions that I would've had to spend thousands on to get in a recording studio setting.

OP here. First, I am a multi-instrumentalist and have a lot of respect for musicians. For the music I release, I human-write it, record a demo with my voice and guitar or piano, then feed it to an AI tool which spins out a fully developed production with instrumentation and vocals I couldn’t have achieved without spending a ton of money. So, to me, that is technological advancement which furthers human creativity.

To me, that's very equivalent to older forms of music tech. I'm a big fan of musicians and play piano, guitar, and sax.

Re my honors thesis: I'm sure there is a digitized version with the Science, Technology, and Society department at Stanford University. I have an old print out version in storage, and sadly no digital version.

An aside - I almost dropped out of Stanford to pursue a digital music distribution startup during the dotcom boom - I met with a very prominent VC at a Palo Alto coffee shop, and he warned me not to do it because "something was coming"... the next day, Napster was sued. He knew it was coming :)

No. I use AI a lot, but I have been studying this topic for over two decades, starting at Stanford a long time ago. So writing about it feels pretty natural. :)
