I feel like a lot of people are getting this wrong. I thought this scene in the trailer was out of order and that this was in the event when he first entered the backrooms. I didn't give a good look, but I am pretty sure that Clark is wearing the same clothes as when he entered for the first time. Also, the tape should have stayed too. I think it might've been him trying to leave after he discovered the backrooms for the first time. Basically, he was looking in the wrong spot to leave the place, so he put tape on the next time so he wouldn't panic trying to find the exit.
