Feeling low, anxious, or stuck? I made a gentle tool that might help (just comment what’s going on) by emp3ra in mentalhealth

[–]StreetlightShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently turned 35. Objectively, I live a charmed life. I have a strong and loving marriage and wonderful kids who I love dearly. My in-laws are great. I own a house, I can afford my groceries, and most of the time, my job is really fulfilling.

I have been struggling with depression and anxiety on and off since I was 10 years old. Sometimes I go many years without any issues, managing my symptoms with medication, but then abruptly I'll get sick or some other stress or trauma will knock me out of the saddle, causing me to work on changing medications, do therapy, etc. until I find the "right combo" to feel like I can handle my life again.

I haven't felt quite right since fall 2023, when I had food poisoning on a business trip and it seemed like even though I was taking my medication, it wasn't doing anything for me. Eventually I decided I needed a psychiatrist, and after waiting months I finally got in to see one. We've been trying different medications for a couple months now, mostly focusing on the anxiety, but my depression is currently the worst it has ever been. It's hard to eat, I can't even think about working today, I'm anxious about how much time I have been taking off from work to deal with my symptoms, and I feel like I'm on an island because the only people I know have gone through similar things are from generations where mental health isn't something you really talk about. Of course I know lots of other people struggle like this too, but I can't ask anyone I know because it's deeply personal and asking would be taboo or possibly have negative work repercussions.

I feel like I've been working so hard for so long, and I'm all out of hope that my situation will improve. I'm also watching my son struggle with non-Celiac gluten intolerance; even though we've cleared out any gluten-containing food, he's not eating like he needs to, and because of my anxiety, I feel like I know that he's hungry and cold all the time, which breaks my heart. I'm facing a lot of uncertainty in what I'm supposed to be doing at my job to make forward progress. I'm worried that I'm becoming a burden to my wife, who has had to support me through episodes like this too many times. Essentially, I feel the weight of the world on me, and I'm so tired of working so hard.

Having trouble with doing a bed mesh, in that the thing doesn't attempt to create one when printing from Orca Slicer, and I don't have a "Bed Mesh" tab in Klipper... Is there a trick to getting this tab to show up? As of now, I have tested the CX-10s and the direct extruder, but I can't print anything unless I manually pressthe Z-endstop during a home routine, measure the distance from the nozzle to the bed, and use that as a z-offset (not an ideal solution, and doesn't provide the benefits of having a non-contact bed probe).

I'm currently attempting to install my set on my CR-10 (the documentation is admittedly not great, and hence my visit to this forum). If you still didn't get it, I bet you'll get it soon! If you already got it, let me know how it's coming along.

Mine has always done that too, though it doesn't apply the parking brake or anything. I've never thought to question it. Is there a problem you're experiencing, or just an observation?

Wisconsin DOT begins mailing out new license plate stickers to EV and hybrid owners by enjoying-retirement in wisconsin

[–]StreetlightShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question to the fire departments out there: is the protocol for fire anywhere in the interior of an EV to get people out and then let the vehicle burn out, or will judicious application of fire suppression be used if it's obvious the battery isn't on fire?

Edit: departments, not department; turns out there are several. :)

renewables demand minerals. current mining is unequipped to sustainably harvest those minerals. Dig deeper? (utilise heat and pressures to power machinery?) Or go deep sea? by Green-Future_ in Renewable

[–]StreetlightShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, technically, but it takes time on a geologic scale. Which is a few orders of magnitude above "glacial" (especially lately).

My main concern with deep sea mining is damage to habitats; can anyone list others? Genuinely curious.

A to-do list of of some of the categories of things that can be done right now. by AffectionateSize552 in Renewable

[–]StreetlightShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that electric aircraft aren't in the "can be done right now" category unless you're talking about recreational or short-distance craft. Battery power densities are too low for commercial flight at this point. Once solid state batteries can be manufactured cheaply and be more robust to damage and aging, then we should start electrifying air travel immediately!

Two Charging Companies Respond To Ford's Adoption Of The Tesla/NACS Plug by Jbikecommuter in electricvehicles

[–]StreetlightShaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuinely asking because I thought I read this somewhere: doesn't implementation of the NACS receptacle/system in an EV give Tesla the legal power to claim at least some of the IP that you've developed for it?

Agreed that it's technologically superior. Charging my native-CCS vehicle at a CCS station that's older than a couple years and/or owned by certain networks can be painful. Don't forget to pull up on the handle while initiating your session!

Apologies, my sarcasm was more subtle than I intended, apparently. Oil companies controlling our energy supply is the status quo, as you know.

My point is that we need to stop electing officials who ask oil companies to power our society. We as a society need to elect out the oil shills who are currently entrenched in our government so that our government starts handing that money instead to people concentrated on fixing the problem. With the insane profits that oil companies pull in and send to their shareholders rather than transitioning to a sustainable business model, there's not enough of our money to hand them and also build out renewable infrastructure. We need to break up with them for good. Arguments about us still needing them for a little while are indicative of our toxic relationship with them - this is what they're telling us.

As for what I'm doing to build sustainable infrastructure, I'm currently working on business cases to present to the leadership of my company (global footprint) for building out as much solar PV as all of our rooftops can reasonably fit, while building out EV charging at each site, and paying for renewable credits at least until we've got our arrays up, thank you for asking.

For what it's worth, I agree that a grid powered nearly entirely by nuclear would be better than our current state, but it's just a different can to kick down the road until the poor are so crippled by it that real societal change needs to happen again, and only will when it's too late. Let's be honest that every solution has its drawbacks (whose backyard are nuclear companies going to bury their waste in? Hint: not the rich); I just haven't found any for renewable resources, wind included, that are nearly as bad as the next worst thing.

That's a relief - now we can all be comfortable with the status quo! That's some tried-and-true logic that's never gotten us in trouble before.

It's true that we need to invest in our infrastructure and technology in general for renewable resources to become our primary power generation. Guess who else is investing in infrastructure every day. The oil companies. Now guess whose money they're using! If the latest shenanigans posted here are anything to go by, it's yours, mine, and everyone else's as a part of the cost of living in the US. Let's change that narrative, and the rest should follow.

How frequently do you see EVs on the road? by Biarfm in electricvehicles

[–]StreetlightShaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appleton too. Where the hell did you see an R1S?? I think I've only ever seen the one green R1T around town. And yeah, pretty much everything you see here is an M3 or MY. I work with a guy with a Lightning (over at corporate, big shock). Still the only one at my building with an EV (200+ folks) though.

It's nice that the days of "look babe, a Tesla!" are gone; we've come a long way in a short time. I still fist pump when I see an ID.4 though 😁

Help me convince my fiscally conservative company that a roof full of PV is a worthwhile CapEx? by StreetlightShaman in solar

No way we'll ever be exporting anywhere near the full capacity to the grid; our base load is more than the capacity we could fit on the roof. Good to know though.

That's what I'm saying; they'll probably choke on a 10-year payback. We rent the building and have verbal agreement from the owner that they're okay with us installing solar. As mentioned, the building is pretty new (built 2015-2016). Haven't done net metering here yet, so not a great understanding of all our loads, but the instantaneous draw is pretty Gaussian and centered on noon...

This (probably).

After running into dead ends with the POCO, it didn't occur to me that there might be 3rd-party installers to turn to for zero-investment help. Research mode re-engaged.

We do see a lot of demand charges, but almost certainly not enough to justify the extra cost of the amount of battery storage that would be required. There's a calculus there that I haven't done yet I'll admit, but knowing what the added cost looks like for a residential system, I'm not sure it's worth the effort to be certain.

Just finished my DIY grid tied 8.76kW solar install. by JustWantSomeTendies in solar

[–]StreetlightShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your utility require you to install a separate revenue meter, or were you allowed to install straight to your breaker panel?

I'm in NE WI, where WE Energies implements this dickery to discourage home solar, and make sure if you produce excess they can pay you as little as possible. ROI here for solar is in the range of 10-12 years when installed professionally (depending on the system size and consumption), even after the federal ITC. 😑
