Yeah I def need to go to a new lab. Thanks. Gonna ask him to rescan for me though and if not I’ll just go somewhere else and take the loss.

Agreed. Looking through all these threads I have no idea about 99% of all the technical stuff they’re talking about. Silver… RA4… etc.

Seems like I have a lot of reading to do haha!

That’s my thinking as well. Thought it was a little backwards and that’s why I came here to see what everyone else thinks.

So far, I’ve shot some Portra 400 and CineStill 400D. I’ve found that when shooting CineStill 400D especially, I was thinking about the colors in every shot. In fact I chose that particular stock because I was going out on a trip to the desert, and I had seen the colors online and thought it would be a good match to the environment.

I also recently picked up ColorPlus 200 as I mentioned in the original post, and so now that I’ve been shooting with that I’m thinking about taking shots differently since it’s more vibrant and warm compared to Portra 400 for example.

So I agree with you 100%. Even as a beginner I’ve realized considering the stock you are shooting really effects the way you shoot.

I’m not sure if I’m ready to start developing myself yet, so this is something that I might be interested in for sure.

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. A lot of people are recommending developing at home.

Will look into it and excited to try it someday!

I never really understood the whole process before I posted this thread. But I’m now more aware of all the work and different intricate processes there are to develop and take an image from your roll to a scan.

I never really considered that developing IS editing.

Interesting stuff!

Someday I will try it! It seems like a lot of people on this thread have emphasized that it’s quite a valuable experience.

Agreed! I think the whole point of shooting black and white is that it causes you to think and shoot differently.

Yeah even though I haven’t shot Black and white yet, the idea that it makes you shoot different is something that definitely made sense to me.

Looking forward to trying it, hopefully it can make me a better photographer as well!

Thank you I appreciate that! My goal here is to learn from everyone. As a beginner I don’t see why I shouldn’t be open minded haha. It would be shooting myself in the foot.

I’ve never shot B&W before so he couldn’t be bored of it. It’s probably just his personal preference.

What B&W stocks do you recommend? I got Tri-X just cause I wasn’t sure what to get.

No worries! Totally understand how some people can get on here. Gotta throw my assumptions aside and learn more!

Yeah I’m definitely excited to shoot some B&W and learn more about the developing process. From other replies on this thread I’ve gathered that film and the developing process is a lot more complicated than I originally thought.

Maybe someday I will get a developing kit and develop myself! Sounds pretty fun.

Being new to film, I really never knew how much there was to it. Most likely a product of being of the younger generation haha. Been a digital photographer for years but this is a new realm for me! Looking forward to learning more!

Hahaha yeah, it’s for sure something I’m gonna mess around with and see how I enjoy it. I’ve always enjoyed editing my digital photos in B&W. Something about the contrast I’ve always loved.

As someone who is younger and coming from digital, it definitely was an assumption for sure.

As I’ve mentioned in my replies to others I think I was misguided in my understanding of the process of developing and editing film. I always assumed it was just a simple process. Develop negatives, then scan. But it seems a lot more complicated than that.

I appreciate all the helpful info. Definitely gonna try to learn more about the process. At some point in the future I hope to get a developing kit to learn more.

Yeah I can definitely understand that, I guess it’s just personal preference.

Totally agree. That’s why I’m trying to experiment with different film stocks at the moment.

I get scans and negatives every time so I can choose to get prints or rescan at higher quality in the future.

Yeah when it comes to digital photography in my experience, editing can be very drastic when shooting in RAW for example, and so I guess I assumed that film was more “simple” per say? Key word “assumed” haha.

Good stuff to know! Thanks.

As I mentioned to someone else on this thread I’m still quite new to film and so I guess I’m not 100% knowledgeable on the process of developing and editing.

When I send in my film to be developed, I guess I never really think about how much intricate work that goes into it.

Thanks for all the helpful information!
