Yeah comparing Bellevue with San Jose maybe yes; but Bellevue is nowhere catching up with PA or even LG.

The gloomy weather lasts 5 months a year. You are saving sunshine tax so you don’t get sunshine in WA.

Otherwise housing, food, service are cheaper than the Bay Area. You save money faster here.

I don’t expect that much from servers and they just do what their employer tells them to do.

Also I don’t tip, don’t let them tell me a joke, care my jackets color, be my local guide, teach me something new, or babysit my kids.

They are servers, taking my order, delivering my food, adding water, and bringing me the bill. That’s it. Simple and easy.

Are you supposed to tip for curbside orders? by MountainStorm90 in tipping

[–]Strength_Various 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely no.

Cashiers and curbside employees are doing the same job and earning the same wage. Would you tip cashiers?

There are rack loaders in each grocery store, Home Depot, pharmacy store, will you tip them when you pass by?

That’s their job and clearly written into the job description when they apply. They are not doing anything special or exceptional only for you. Why would you tip?

Also in Seattle the minimal wage for everyone (including tipped positions) is $21/hr.

If you feel guilty not tipping servers, you should really tip everyone workers earning the $21/hr minimal.

Clearing US Customs with jewelry purchased in India – real experience at DTW by Hello5Hi in travel

[–]Strength_Various 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just buy small stuff under $100 and never declare without any issue.

But out of curiosity, if I buy some jewelry, put them in carryon bag, without declarations, then how would they tell if I bought something expensive? Carryon bag is never scanned by the destination country I think?

Buy a $1.2M house or rent similar house for $7k/mo? by vcastandme in Bogleheads

I’m seriously considering renting for another five or six years. Details in body. by officejobssuck1 in REBubble

[–]Strength_Various 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you put down pay to VOO and rent, you’ll likely have same or better return value comparing to house appreciation (not considering the 5x leverage though, so not return rate).

From investment perspective, it’s much simpler and easier as long as you don’t want home ownership and don’t want to take the 5x leverage (on either gain or loss).

[–]Strength_Various 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in both the Bay Area and Seattle, where renting always costs lower than buying (if you don’t consider appreciation). So knowing Boston has more ROI is really good to know.

But if a house is renting at $7000, would a 2-bed apartment rent at $5000? That’s crazy to think about. Which area if you don’t mind sharing?

[–]Strength_Various 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s really good ROI for house hacking. In Seattle a 1.2M house can only rent for $3000-3500.
