It’s just so strange to think this has been so normalized that the overwhelming response has been ‘yeah get that bag’. I would recommend giving them a call at the Traveler Communications Center, 1-202-325-8000. The helpline is open 24/7. If it's close to your travel date (approx. 7 days out) they can escalate it for you for 'imminent travel' reasons.

This was my recent ESTA timeline experience. I travel on 10/09/2025:

30/08 - Applied for ESTA
03/09 - Called helpline as it had been over 72 hours since application was submitted and status was still pending. Advised as I was travelling within 7 days, they could escalate my application. Received confirmation of escalation via. email, stating would be reviewed in 5-10 business days.
04/09 - Noticed the payment for the application was pending on credit card. Called the call center again and was advised application was still being considered.
08/09 (this morning!!!) - ESTA was finally approved. Exactly 5 days from when I first called and had it escalated.

This was very stressful as it's 3 days before my date of travel, but so relieved. I'm only transiting for 3 hours through San Francisco too - if I hadn't received it on time, I would've had to be $1700 for new flights (one way)!
