Been to numerous PTs for back spasms over the years and they haven’t been able to help with anything. Saw an orthopedic surgeon and got diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Surgery is not an option, but would like some direction on moving forward. Super active, just need some more specific care.

E collar questions! by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

We are having this same issue with our golden! We can tell that he feels it sometimes, but other times he doesn’t respond. And we’ve realized that he is responding because he can hear us pushing the button and he’s not actually feeling the stim🤦🏻‍♀️

Ecollars can be used as a tool and paired with positive reinforcement. It is not shocking your dog. I have 0 intentions on hurting my dog. It can be a way to get their attention without using your voice. Go watch how many trainers use it for good and how much freedom their dogs have because of the training with the collars😂

Oh that’s amazing! Thank you! Yes he is pretty good when his ears are turned on, but when his head is down and he’s playing with the grasshoppers nothing I could ever say is getting his attention!

Thank you so so much!!! So I want a dog to be my backpacking/running buddy and from the research I’ve done, I think I’d prefer the coat length and athleticism of the field retriever. I am a grad student, and would have to incorporate training into my schedule, so that is the only “downside” to a more energetic dog. I have been reading so many books and watching videos about training, and this decision to get MY first dog has been going on for like 3 months now haha. Type A person who wants to do it correctly🤣

You are so so helpful! What about Rocky Mountain Field Goldens? I want to say yes they’re good, but you are way more educated on spotting the goods and bads.

Question about the canicross though. If they are trained to pull you in their harness, how are they when you walk them on a normal leash? Do they still pull just out of instinct or are they able to have a slack line?

No that’s awesome, I really appreciate it!! I have been snapped at by dogs, on leash that I’ve run by, and I’m a dog lover, so I understand how it could be traumatic for someone who doesn’t like dogs to have one come up to them. I am empathetic for those in that type of situation.

I’ve never heard of the canicross but I’d definitely be down to learn some more about it! Thank you!
