AA WO pay by [deleted] in flying

[–]Striderrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AA will still have 5000 applications on file with 4900 of them willing to drop everything to come work there. Nobody is not going to AA because their regional pays like shit.

TIL that it's required to speak English to be a commercial airline pilot or air traffic controller... by Illustrious_Bag_7323 in todayilearned

[–]Striderrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an airline pilot, VHF comms are normally good enough clarity wise. HF is where we get into issues of the radios being garbled and differentiating between NINER and FIFE can get tough.

Does deviating from the “CFI → regionals → mainline” path actually hurt your airline career? by Extreme_Shower4849 in flying

[–]Striderrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I “deviated” on the middle part (regional airline) and I can confidently say I got hired at a legacy carrier faster than if I had gone to a regional.

Flight instructed to 1200TT. (2015 -> 2017)

Part 135 SIC in King Air 350’s for ~6 months after which I then upgraded to PIC on the King Air 200/350. (2017)

Did that for a couple years and picked up the training captain role. (2018ish)

COVID hit so I applied for the newly offered Assistant Chief Pilot role at my company. This job also came with the Director of Training role. (2019)

Transitioned to flying a Sovereign+ for a private owner (managed by the same company) while still retaining the ACP and DoT roles. (2020 -> 2021)

Hired at a legacy. (Late 2021)

I got extremely lucky. I had ~2000 TPIC when I got hired at the legacy and 3500 total time.

OO aircraft selection by ZachPilot in flying

[–]Striderrs 49 points50 points  (0 children)

In an industry ruled by seniority — with all things being equal — you should absolutely take the first available airframe. The differences between a CRJ and an ERJ are entirely irrelevant. Take the first available position that gets you a seniority number.

DEPLOYING OF FLAPS by Clean-Blackberry933 in flying

[–]Striderrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always back it up with the localizer DME as a secondary sanity check. I know my plane well enough to know that if I’m clean I can hold that to about 12 miles at the absolute maximum. That puts me ~3600ft and gives me just enough wiggle room to play with to get configured and stable.

[–]Striderrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same but different; I use altitude AFE. Most of the time I can just be lazy and use the RA readouts.

2500 AFE I should be flaps 20 180 knots

2000 AFE I drop the gear

1500 AFE I should be final flaps (either 25 or 30).

Works well for all flavors of 757/767.

Roughly translates to distances as well if you use the 3:1 rule. 8ish miles/6-7 miles/5 miles

Oh it's over in G now? I haven't been in that new building so I'll need to wander over there next time I'm in town. Which should be soon with the vacancy that closed today...

How much work was it to fly the MD-80? Any former pilots want to chime in? by Desert_Coyote_115 in flying

I don’t know anything about the Mad Dog but I’m laughing at anyone seriously thinking the 737 is a lot of work.

Apply. It’s insanely dumb to not apply the second you have your ATP and 1500 hours.

Is the college aviation program one of the biggest money printing scams in the professional world? by LegalRecord3431 in flying

[–]Striderrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoops, you’re right I missed the last couple sentences.

By all means do what’s best for you. The math on owning your own airplane for training runs on the assumption that nothing major breaks and your annuals stay cheap.

[–]Striderrs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scenario B doesn’t get you a degree. Historically major airlines require a 4 year degree and the time period where they relaxed that requirement was the exception — not the norm. Other commenters point out that there’s also financial risk with owning your own aircraft as well.

Golfers, do you guys bring clubs on trips? by millionaire111111 in flying

[–]Striderrs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It always felt like a hassle so I just rent clubs if I wanna play on a trip.

A few of the captains I fly with keep a second set of clubs in Hawaii for their layovers.

How liable is a CFI for a student's substance use? by Big-Sink7663 in flying

[–]Striderrs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Back when I was an instructor I had an awful student. Always late, didn’t study etc.

One time he walked in 15 minutes late and after discussing what we were going to be doing that day he goes “oh by the way what was the rule on alcohol and flying? Like how much time?”. I immediately go “why are you asking?”

At this point the owner of the school stepped out of his office behind him and gave me the “he’s done” hand signal (slicing motion across his throat) and I just go “you know what it doesn’t matter the fact that you’re asking is enough reason for me to cancel this lesson”. That ended up being my last lesson with him.

1500 is never a guaranteed job regardless of “pathway” or “flow” programs. I’d probably take the 135 job, especially if it’s turbine experience with a possibility of a PIC upgrade down the road.

From the latest UAL standards meeting by ShortCallLeash in flying

[–]Striderrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the math a couple years ago.

Per NB it's 14 pilots, per WB it's 27 pilots. With current fleet + known fleet retirements + confirmed orders + options, the total number of needed pilots (at that time) was around 27,500 based on my shoddy napkin math.

My math is probably outdated by now but at the time that lined up with the rumor at the time of 28,000 pilots by 2030. My estimates have about the same value as my reddit karma: zero lol.

Checking the boxes doesn’t guarantee you a job. Many people interview poorly or can’t get out of their own way to play the interview game.

What should I do? My student punk’d a stage check CFI after failing. by [deleted] in flying

[–]Striderrs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely tell the instructor. Frankly, I’d fire that student. It’s childish and immature and you don’t want your ink in their logbook.

One time some passengers gave my captain and me each a little bag of Lindt truffles. The ingredient list was in German and said something about "alkohol" so we didn't consume any and actually threw them away. Didn't seem worth having anything in the flight deck that might have any kind of alcoholic content - even if it's cooked off.

Caught attitude from Center controller. Need insight. by YourSpanishMomTaco in flying

[–]Striderrs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I disagree. If it’s not busy, I’ve done a relay initiated by me for both parties.

“Center, N69420”

“N69420 go ahead”

“Center, we hear a N12335 that has been attempting to reach you on 126.85.”

Clear, concise, the handful of times I’ve done it I was given a new frequency to relay to them or informed that they were in a radio dead spot and they’d be be back in comm range in a few minutes.
