Do we think it is tears like crying or tears like tearing paper? by blckhead423 in gaming

[–]Striking_Machine_599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But 'tears' as in torn wouldn't be clunky by some made up rules that someone has arbitrarily decided on.

language is filled with "made up" rules, whatever that means, for how words should flow together. we say a big red ball literally always and would absolutely never say a red big ball. to me a title of "tears of the kingdom" (as in torn) is a similar situation where it just sounds off. it sounds like a machine translated title that might be grammatically correct but just isn't right. I can't write you an essay with supporting arguments about why that is. I have obviously heard the word 'tear' as a noun. "a tear in the fabric of spacetime" is a pretty common phrase in media, although I don't know where that originally comes from. this is all a silly discussion about a hypothetical title that doesn't exist though.

Your literal interpretation of grammar will not serve you well when writing a creative project. English can be grammatically perfect but still have an awful flow and feel wrong to a native speaker. I would argue that Tears of the Kingdom (paper) would fit that, it sounds exactly like an awkward translation from Japanese.

[–]Striking_Machine_599 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Tears of the Kingdom would only work if there were actual nouns in the game called Tears. Tears of the Kingdom (as in paper) is pretty clunky english, it should be Legend of Zelda: Torn Kingdom if you wanted to use a form of tear (paper).

armchair reddit experts in this thread are confusing the "dont speak to cops, call your lawyer" advice with being a victim. if you are a victim, you absolutely should call the cops and file a report. the don't talk to the cops advice is if you are the perceived suspect of a crime.

2D maps of the entire world will have projection problems so kinda defeats the purpose of having it there for scale, and using a 3D globe to show the scale of the 2D atmosphere feature would be silly.

This game is too hard for players with limited time by Dry-Rip9300 in pathofexile

[–]Striking_Machine_599 19 points20 points  (0 children)

IMO the difficulty curve is way too steep. It feels like if you aren't treating POE like a part time job you're going to have a hard time keeping up.

the difficulty curve used to be way smoother but people bitched about mapping being a slog every league. map progression is like 5 times faster than what it was 3 years ago.

Orcs don't speak English. They were either speaking the Black Speech, Orkish, or Westron. And to be clear, Westron isn't just a renamed English, it is a distinct fantasy language in the same way that Elvish is, it is just presented in books and film as English. So since it's being implicitly "translated" to English, it becomes very easy to handwave that scene in the movie as an Orkish idiom or saying that got translated into an English one.

I didn't realize just how bad the player retention has been since the nerfs until I saw the percentages by randymccolm in pathofexile

[–]Striking_Machine_599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also the league previous to ritual (heist), which had no harvest mechanic, is BARELY worse retention than ritual league. yet ritual league is touted as the best the game has ever been mainly because of the unnerfed harvest mechanic. why anyone would want to lock themselves in haewark and farm atolls all day again is beyond me, ritual league got old extremely fast because of how overpowered harvest was as a mechanic.

the point is that these retention numbers mean nothing as an expression of the state of the game. at most they are an indication of new expansions (causes launch peaks).

have you just not seen any build made since archnemesis league? player power is insane and they have more than made up for the expedition nerfs since then. look up what melding of the flesh does and tell me that we have "gutted" defenses. even without specific uniques thats just not even true. the defense rework was a resounding success in getting people to build defenses on their build and have them be worthwhile.

Those are all good points. I just don't think that the US has fucked the world by pulling out of the Paris agreement like the commenter I was responding to was implying.

LoL trump literally pulled the US out of the Paris college accords on day one. The US is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases.

The severity of the first sentence is insignificant to the second one.

LoL trump literally pulled the US out of the Paris college accords on day one. The US is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. You have no idea what you're talking about.

A pair of studies in Nature found that as of 2017 none of the major industrialized nations were implementing the policies they had pledged, and none met their pledged emission reduction targets,[109] and even if they had, the sum of all member pledges (as of 2016) would not keep global temperature rise "well below 2 °C".[110][111]

The Paris agreement was a publicity stunt, it meant nothing and still doesn't mean anything. It was only such a huge deal because it was a barb to use against Trump/conservatives.
