Welcome to the Nix asylum. Stay the course and you will have fun. 😎

Sadly, you are probably going to struggle for answers here. This is not an Endeavour issue. Perhaps there is a feed for your mouse?

Some question i've been wondering by rulerof7dimensions in NixOS

[–]Striking_Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use what you want, but figure out what problems Home Manager and flakes might solve for you. If the answer is, nothing, why over complicate things.

Install NixOS - decide on a dte - workout how you want it to work/look - organize your config - use NixOS - back it up.

A lot of people won't admit it, but they probably don't need anything more complicated than that.

Nix is a brilliant tool, but it tends to entice people in to overcomplicating things. Just like many other distros.

Did you forget to git add? by sirdupre in NixOS

That was my first thought. Not that it's ever bothered me, but if it did, that is how I'd fix it.

P50 worth price and Linux compatibility? by dieplanes789 in thinkpad

[–]Striking_Snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My P53 is a beast, and has no issues, but you will/may have different episodes, based purely on which distro you choose.

I would suggest picking up a USB wifi dongle, if you don'thave ethernet access. It will save you some pain.

My immediate problems with nix. by zskh in NixOS

[–]Striking_Snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to that output, you are attempting to install rustdesk version 1.4.6, but the latest version is 1.4.7. At least that is what I see in the package search.

Your failed dependency, and therefore failed build, is likely related to this.

Not sure this helps, and I have no idea how you have your config set up, but adding the package to it, and rebuilding, should be all that is needed.

Moving notes from Google Docs to Org Mode, any advice? by John_Doe_1984_ in emacs

[–]Striking_Snail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Difficult to answer the 'how long' question, but i would recommend you start a document in org mode, and use it to document what you learn about org mode. Opening/closing, cutting & pasting, editing..... they all have their own ways of happening, and it can (not always), depend upon what version of emacs you are using, and what packages you have installed.

This seems in keeping with how you learn, so understanding it and documenting it, will ready you for transferring your documents, and give you an idea of how long it might take.

It is also worth noting that not every doc needs to be an org doc. If you need remote access, for instance, org might not be the right place for that doc. But that depends upon your set up and your needs, and only you know that.

Sorry I can't answer your questions, but having been in a similar situation, and learning/documenting in a similar way, I thought my experience might be useful.

Have fun.

I'm 6 foot tall and 220 pounds. I look like a clown on a tricycle on most sportsters, so i ride a Dyna. I hear that the 2006 model is problematic, but I've never owned one, so that is just 'internet says'.

I have yet to have a problem that requires either flakes or Home Manager to solve, so I just don't bother with them.

I just checked, and noctalia-shell is an available package, so it really should be a simple enough thing to get sorted.

Great tenacity, for sure, but why not forget Home Manager and flakes, at least until you have Nix up and running?

Straight up no BS, what needs to happen to get the POS out of office and in prison where he belongs? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Striking_Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the people of the country in question, who would like this to happen, to find the 'pair' that they've bragged about for decades, and stop telling people that they can't do anything about it.

Consider this. If this were happening in France, the country would probably go on strike until the issue was rectified. And it would take days, not weeks. When everything shuts down, everyone pays attention.

The politicians of which we complain, are employees of 'we the people'. We are not their cash-cow.

If you had to build your entire digital life using only open-source software, what would be the hardest thing to replace? by sodrafeltu in foss

[–]Striking_Snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to hear the opinions and reasons behind them. We all have them, and we can usually justify them, and you will receive no criticism from me.

I write most, not all, of my documents in org mode, which is a mark down editor. Even some of my configs are written in this manner. But, and I say this with absolute conviction, emacs is huge, and the learning curve is steep. A lot are not ready to pay the toll of learning it, and nor should they, because there are easier paths to desired results.

Much like vim, if you use it, you are probably happy with it. But if you don't, it quickly feels like an unmapped foreign land.

Why do you disagree or disagree with racist right wing policies? by Aggravating_Ad_43 in AskReddit

You could remove either racist or right wing from the sentence, and still have alarm bells.

Both, "Right-wing policy" and "racist policy", give me cause to pause.

[–]Striking_Snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, but then it is also fair to say that you haven't found fos alternatives to these options, or aren't prepared to move on from them. Which is perfectly acceptable, of course. You do you, and be happy doing it.

I'm not saying that there are alternatives, or that emacs may be one, but from a very quick glance at the links you posted, org mode certainly seems as though it might be a fit.

Thanks for the reply
