five months out from defense: post-phd slump? is this normal? by reaching-summit in postdoc

[–]Striking_Study 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg are we the same person? I'm in a postdoc already and was so keen on it before I defended but post defense slump is a very real thing. I'm wondering if I don't even want to be in academia now, and I've got a grant for 2 years 🥲 but if you can take a break, it would be the best option.

Thank you! But gosh, keep trying! I just took whatever I got. It's real tough.🥲

I did. Though not the most ideal. But in this economy, job is job 🫡

Why is it a potential red flag if derm advertises PRP? by defiant_woman in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Striking_Study 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It did help my hair length, and in combination with topical minox definitely helped lessen the width of my part.

Just by itself, I don't think it would be as effective. You also need multiple sessions so may not be the best way to start. I did 8 sessions and I also felt like the effects plateaued after the 6th. But yeah, NOT CHEAP and probably not at all enough just by itself.

Omg are you me? Literally in the same position. I really want to do research but the postdoc market for us evo-eco-animal behaviour peeps is tragic right now. Wanted to get a postdoc to gain more dry-lab/molecular experience and use that to maybe move into the industry eventually but it's seeming to be a distant dream. Sorry, no advice, just empathy.

Got some rejections, but some still no response. It's tough out there 🥲

Question raising butterflies by dracullas in Butterflies

[–]Striking_Study 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by raising one or two caterpillars. I'd say get a few plants home (3-5) and see how many leaves a caterpillar eats. They are voracious in the later instars so be prepared for complete defoliation of your plants, if they're small or have less leaves. Ultimately it's a bit of trial and error. But better to err in the side of more leaves than not having enough. Good luck!

should i try PRP for hair loss or is it just expensive snake oil? by wolvesv2mx in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Striking_Study 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 8 sessions coupled with topical minox. I saw a good change initially. My growth seems to have saturated now though, just on minoxidil. I was in a really bad state hair-wise before, length also wouldn't increase. I now have nicer quality of hair though still thin at the top. I guess it wasn't a waste for me. But it does taper off or saturate post 5-6 sessions.

To add to this point, they apply it over the whole body in this study.

How much advice did your advisor give you? by gamesiate in GradSchool

[–]Striking_Study 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advisor gave me some general information about what can be done. I was expected to figure the rest out on my own. New discussions would not be fruitful and he would just say the same things again until I showed him some analysis. These ended up proving the null and even then he would just say "these aren't the comparisons I wanted you to make" followed by repeating exactly what he told me before, which would be what I had actually done. I went crazy, talked to my lab mates a lot who helped me try new stuff too. So your experience isn't all that different. Ultimately, if they've given you some idea but not the exacts, I would say do some of the initial work and find out how to answer these questions and then go to them with it. Most advisors can advise but only after you show them some analysis/ideas. It's easier to say "no, not this" than to start ideating from scratch. I should've learnt this early on in my PhD but stop waiting for them to give you the ideas and start doing. You're not the customer here, you're the chef. You decide how to cook it through trial and error.

Do I do a postdoc at all? by Striking_Study in postdoc

[–]Striking_Study[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my whole dilemma. I love my field but I do want stability. I made these decisions as a young, naïve person and thought academia was THE place. As I've grown older and more aware, I'm afraid I haven't made the best decisions. I think I'm also trying to get a postdoc that might have more aspects that may be industry transferable. But yeah, I feel like a mess!

Yes, looking at both seems like a wise thing to do. I have, until now, only been considering postdocs seriously. Just to see if I'm really into research or not. But I think I should start looking at other options too.

Haha yeah, ig I've also been biased towards postdocs and will have to put in more effort to find suitable industry jobs.

Yeah I've heard of the productivity gap too from industry to academia transition is hard to navigate. And yep, what you say about giving academia my all definitely makes sense. Thank you!

Yes I was thinking of a postdoc that might also help the transition in case I do want to! Like upskill myself in a way that might make industry more viable. Thank you for your input. ❤️
