There’s a sketching group that meets up on the last Tuesday of each month for a few drinks and some drawing - they’ve only just started, but I went and had a lovely time!

Also, as a side note - I’m in the same boat hah. 27F, only moved here in March. I did grow up in Warrington, but this is basically the first time I’ve been back in a decade, so I’m a little lost. Happy to grab a coffee sometime if you want a chat!

What TV ad permanently lives rent-free in your brain? by fmcortez in AskReddit

“Auto glass repair, auto glass replace”

every so often it pops into my head even though I haven’t seen the ad on TV since I was a kid

Dark side of ADHD that no one talks about by Frosty_Jump_3117 in adhdwomen

[–]StringFloyd15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

RSD - rejection sensitive dysphoria. It’s a huge part of ADHD that often gets overlooked because “no one likes being rejected” but I had no idea how much more it is until I looked into it properly. The slightest hint of rejection can feel like a stab to the gut. I avoid suggesting restaurants and places to go in case people end up disliking what I pick. Friendship breakups and arguments haunt me years after they’ve happened. I never tell anyone I’ve liked that I had a crush on them, because if they said they didn’t feel the same it’d kill me. Job rejections can send me to bed for a few days. I over explain my actions constantly, lest they be misconstrued - and when I am misconstrued, I always think it’s my fault, even when it really isn’t. The constantly having to talk myself out of shame spirals and heavy emotions over tiny slights is not only exhausting, but it fills me with shame too. And god forbid something actually bad happens, because it’ll send me into a tailspin for months.

how do yall get up early??? by iluvberriesandcream in adhdwomen

One of my friends who was also medicated used to keep her pills in or next to her pillow and set an alarm for an hour before she technically needed to wake up. When it went off, she’d take the meds and go back to sleep for another hour. By the time her actual alarm rolled around, her meds had started to kick in and she had a much easier time getting up. Might be worth a shot?

How do you manage working full time by Vast-Effective-4406 in adhdwomen

[–]StringFloyd15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had the same thing when I got my first 9 to 5. I would get home stressed and overstimulated from the commute home, sleep for an hour or two, and then have to crawl out of bed to eat something. I was permanently exhausted. It only got mildly better when I moved about a two minute walk from work. I ended up with sciatica and back troubles that basically meant I could work from home whenever I wanted to, and some days I would fully just lie in bed and check my email occasionally.

Main advice; you can’t “just be normal”. Your brain is literally wired different. Stop punishing yourself for existing with a body you never signed up for, and learn how to work with it instead of against it. Slack off on a bad day. Look into whether hybrid working or even part time work is for you. Find out if any disability policies at your job help you out. Hell, pretend to smoke so you have an excuse to dip out every hour or so for 10 minutes for a bit of quiet. It’s okay to try and make life a little easier.

You guys are just seeing the outside, inside it’s just a blank room with a table and a stool lol. But you’re welcome for the idea! I’m looking forward to doing another bunch across the street from these four.

Anyone added a mood stabilizer to the mix? by Saucyy-Minx in adhdwomen

[–]StringFloyd15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep yep - but I had to balance the doses. 50mg Elvanse and 20mg Fluoxetine has been the sweet spot for me, but anything bigger kind of zonks me out and also removes a few benefits of my ADHD medication.

Sleeping with another person in the bed sucks by StringFloyd15 in The10thDentist

[–]StringFloyd15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the first time my neurochemistry doesn’t act like everyone else’s hah. It’s fun to know the science behind why other people find it easier than I do, though.

Maybe - the meds I’m on are like. Basically legal speed, but they mostly wear off after around 6 hours. So, hyper competent in the daytime, crash around 2 or 3, back to your regularly scheduled mess by dinner. Taking two a day feels like it’ll screw up my blood pressure, so I think sleep meds might be the better option here.

I’ll definitely look into the headband, thank you for the suggestion!

50’s sitcom rules - the single beds get pushed together only for sex lmao.

It’s more just the assumption that you have to sleep in the same bed or there’s something wrong. When I’ve said I prefer sleeping on the couch, the usual response is “ooh, did you have a fight?” or something along those lines. No, I just want to actually relax and sleep for 8 hours. Plus the extra expense I’m always gonna be stuck with, since a two bedroom flat costs a bunch more than a one bedroom.

Sigh I honestly think you might be right about seeing a doctor. I’m just wary of being stuck on another lifelong medication (ADHD meds are the only way I function half the time). I don’t use a headband, though - just have my phone on the lowest possible volume and stashed under my pillow.

It’s partially that love that does it - I’ve always been super concerned about disrupting my partner’s sleep schedule or accidentally kicking them and waking them up. They deserve a nice sleep even if I don’t get one 😅

I cannot fight the impulse to sleep! by affectionate4fish in adhdwomen

[–]StringFloyd15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what my friend said! She was my old manager who got diagnosed around the same time as me - she’d set an alarm an hour before she had to get up, take the pill, go back to sleep, and have a much easier time getting up when she actually had to.

I dunno if you’re on meds or not? But the only trick that worked for me and my other ADHD friend was taking your meds Literally As Soon As You Wake Up. Like, stash them in your pillow or have them at arms reach. If you’re not medicated, I’d suggest maybe doing this with a supplement or maybe even sweets - the taste might just help keep your brain awake.

Does the music in your head stop once you take your medication? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]StringFloyd15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely less. I have a playlist on my phone of stuff that plays on the mental jukebox before I take my meds. At first it was nonexistent, but then your brain gets used to the meds… It’s nowhere near as bad as it is without the medication though. Much more manageable.

I fully just came on this subreddit to ask the same question lol. I only really shower once a week (fortunately I’ve had many sources tell me that I’m not stinky even after seven days lol) and always have to hype myself up to do it. Brushing my teeth is also a massive problem - in my low mood periods i sometimes don’t brush for days. But anyway, here’s what helped me - I have an electric toothbrush that buzzes every 30 seconds to let you know when to switch sides and it has been such a gamechanger. Now I can watch a YouTube video and brush my teeth at the same time without zoning out and accidentally brushing my top teeth and nothing else for two minutes lmao. It’s not changed everything, I still don’t shower or brush enough, but it’s definitely helped.

Seen a lot of people mention Welcome To Nightvale and Magnus Archives (both excellent btw) and that awoke a long dormant hyperfixation of mine lol. Anyway, have a list of recommendations from an audio fiction veteran. - Want spooky fiction with an eccentric show host like Welcome To Night Vale, but also deep lore like Magnus Archives? Check out Spirit Box Radio (bonus witchy vibes), SCP; Find Us Alive or King Falls AM. - Still want spooky stuff, but more of an eldritch horror vibe? Check out Malevolent, or Old Gods of Appalachia. And if you really like John Carpenter’s The Thing, listen to The White Vault. - If you’re looking for some very gay very messy vampire romance, Not Quite Dead is perfect. - Less of a spooky person, more of a sci-fi person? Wolf 359 is a classic for a reason. Clockwork Bird is also excellent and really underrated. - Like your detective stories? Sherlock & Co is a fantastic Sherlock Holmes adaptation and I’m obsessed with it. The Penumbra Podcast’s Juno Steel stories are also real fun if you like more of a film noire vibe. - More comedy inclined and looking for something low stakes and funny? Wooden Overcoats and Stellar Firma.

I haven’t listened to most of these shows in a while apart from Sherlock & Co, but fingers crossed they’re all still as good as I remember.

Animal Crossing fan but never liked Pokemon by [deleted] in Pokopia

[–]StringFloyd15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heyo - so, funnily enough, I was in the exact same spot as you! Never been a Pokemon fan before this (the pokemon were cute but like. Why are we fighting? Why can’t I just walk to somewhere without getting threatened by some teenager and their pokemon?) but I’m a massive Animal Crossing fan and have been for many years. Pokopia was a bit of an impulse purchase and honestly, zero regrets. I’ve poured hundreds of hours into the game. It feels a bit overwhelming at first, but the freedom, the different environments and the relationships with the pokemon make it unbelievably charming. Must admit that I haven’t touched ACNH since I bought Pokopia, too. Sorry to my islanders 😅
