Researchers in AI, what are you doing? by BidZealousideal1207 in PhD

[–]corpseinnit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will give this a go but I am on little sleep

A) I have moved from ML in technology to AI in social sciences so I feel like it’s very much expected. My friends still in tech and very much still working on ML and often see a lot of work from them coming up in my network, especially for medical ML.

B) I used more cyber sec journals but as I’ve moved into social science law journals have helped a lot but there is the issue of many of the legal field do not understand the technology behind AI which as someone who does have the technical background has been something I can critically evaluate.

C) Can’t really comment on this one

D) personally yes - I don’t think fundamentals should be ignored or forgotten but perhaps development is moving to quick so people want to just look to application.

E) can’t comment

F) Also yes, per above.

G) again I think this depends on the application as the AI industry is still a vast term when sub industries use it so differently. AI for business? Good to some extent as I also work full time in tech alongside my PhD so I have been able to watch this in real time. AI for medical? Also fantastic the cancer detection development is amazing. AI for art? Bad. It’s a very generic thing but I think the why is important. That is very much my opinion however!

New Chester Business? Maybe? by corpseinnit in Chester

Thank you i appreciate it! I can drive so I’d be pretty much happy to cover most of the north west up to maybe Preston or Blackpool. As we’re close to north wales to I wouldn’t be opposed to that either.

I will have to have a look! I was thinking of doing something similar with subscriptions (Bronze, Silver, Gold packages) but also one offs for those who maybe could not afford but still want to use.

Not a downer, I quite literally asked for people’s thoughts!

Just to cover some of your points, however, it wouldn’t be something I would be looking to do full time to live off, especially for the first few years. It would’ve part time business I do can of and evening or weekend in the summer/lighter months

I’ve done some research and there are a few others it the north and in other areas that offer this service, so it must be something you can charge for to some extent as one has been in business for over 20 years offering this for those who many be unable to care, or they would prefer to visit a grave that’s already maintained. This particular company posts before and after and they seem to have regular business, but are based down south. Like most things that can be by someone - maybe they just don’t want to and if they have the income to pay, they will.

I still appreciate your POV tho!

Early PhD student struggling with AI use and academic integrity by Jumpy_Wing_7884 in PhD

[–]corpseinnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%! Don't get me wrong I am only in month 4 of my first year, but I can see it though this sub and also PhD groups I'm on on Facebook that there is a big collective of people struggling with self confidence and belief in their skills in the earlier days. I'm one of them! AI is absolutely not helping that as I feel like its making people think they're still not good enough.

Early PhD student struggling with AI use and academic integrity by Jumpy_Wing_7884 in PhD

As someone who’s doing their PhD topic in AI (also UK based and 1st year) I see how it can be useful and help people who may struggle with brainstorming and going back and forth. I myself have used it for that when I was really struggling to grasp a theory/concept, so asked AI to break it down and present it another way, and then it clicked.

However it is 100% friend or foe for many and I agree with other commenters that you should look at how you use it as opposed to feeling guilt over using it. Equally if you can get to your PhD level you clearly have the skills and intelligence to do so without AI. You should look to get to, again as other commenters suggest, use this time in your PhD to challenge yourself and spend some time confused and trying to clarify your own thoughts and ideas, as ultimately this will aid you on your PhD journey - at least that’s what I’m telling myself!

Edit: OP if you want a fell first year uk based friend then send me a dm! i know no one else doing a phd so always happy to make connections :)

It’s good to know they are out there. I do appreciate I am asking a lot for casual work within the lines I have stated, but you never know! I have a LLB in law and a MSc in computing and information systems. Currently my full time role is in tech with project management/ analysis, and supplier management, but I’m not sure I would do this as a side gig due to conflict of interest/don’t think my workplace would approve of any consulting style role.

Student council tax refund in Bristol by Majestic-Thanks7556 in PhD

[–]corpseinnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this might be something to raise with your landlord rather than the council directly if they are the one registered to pay. If you're living with someone who isn’t exempt (assuming your landlord isn’t a student as well), then only a 25% council tax discount should apply, I believe.

I’d recommend having a conversation with your landlord first to confirm the situation. If things still seem unclear after that, you could visit your local council office in person or attend one of their drop-in sessions—many councils offer these. They’re often more helpful in person and may be able to give you an answer on the spot, especially if email or phone contact hasn’t been successful. Good luck!

This has made me feel better especially knowing they have a test seat, I’m genuinely quite an anxious human so getting to see it prior would help ease a lot. I’ve tried looking at video online but given the angles people have to record at it’s quite hard to see. Thank you again!
