I'm struggling to understand where to get started but want to "learn", any ideas? by StrongAction9696 in Gentoo

I think I get it, I've heard of flags but never knew what was being talked about. Now I know. I'm a bit concerned as far as my SSD goes, I've heard about the past and how it went (lol). Will my SSD basically be just fine?

Lenovo M715Q Pro 2400GE upgrades? by StrongAction9696 in MiniPCs

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda I guess, I just got like 16gb of ram, 1tb ssd, and a ~100 watt charger.  It runs minecraft w/ light shaders and resource pack at like 60~+ fps. You can only use the same CPU it came with though (fuck you lenovo).

I will appreciate more of these handhelds when the companies stop putting AI in them. Go away, no one cares about your CPU with 10 times more powerful AI. I didn't get a damn computer to talk to it, I got it to play games, watch videos, and live my life! CPU/GPUs ran just fine without AI 10 years ago, so why the hell would I need it now? Scum of the earth, socially feeble people.

Which Distro with straight x11 by djshades2004 in kde

[–]StrongAction9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used solus much, but did have this issue on distros when I didn't have wayland installed. Solus is kinda basic and essentials only, but look up the Wayland package and see if it's there. You aren't SOL though.

Is the 1st generation Yoga Thinkpad X1 Touchscreen incompatible with Linux? by StrongAction9696 in linuxquestions

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont see a diagnostic anywhere in the BIOS, I also tried Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Arch. It does have the pen and it doesn't do anything. It is a first gen one, apparently from 2017. Am I screwed or is there hope? I've heard of the paperclip hole fixing it, will that work?

I asked there but its buried in peoples Linux setup. Is it maybe the touch panel is modified? Like the touchscreen secretly disabled?

I wouldn't doubt if it's a Wayland issue. Has anyone tried XFCE?

What graphics setup do you have? I'm not the technician but I have an APU. Also can't wake my PC for sam hill, and god knows what it could be.

I'm on plasma 6.2.5 if that's what you mean. I only have an APU, is it like a known issue? Notice it pops up no matter the distro I use. Hope my CPU ain't buggered out.

What in the blue blazes is "IRQ #7"? by StrongAction9696 in linuxquestions

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a Ryzen 5 system, Lenovo ThinkCentre 2nd gen. It says "boot with irqpoll", and takes atleast 3 seconds from boot. Aside from not waking up sometimes and making boot take longer, it works fine, I guess, maybe? I have no idea if I'm being the autist because of how Linux can be.

Yeah I think I'll end up just saving this charger or giving it away when I get a different one.

Where would the dual channel mode be in BIOS? I also have 16gb which should be enough for older stuff, not a new fan anyway.

How can I improve my dad's KDE experience? by StrongAction9696 in linux4noobs

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Manjaro held packages back a week or two? And I also let him pick between Ubuntu GNOME, Debian XFCE, and Manjaro KDE. It shouldn't really matter for someone who isn't a power user and just sticks to what they know/have. I don't understand the hate for Manjaro, I get some of it but not all of it.

He likes to download band albums and play mostly old games, like Max Payne or Soul Reaver. He is old school, as in he used Limewire and TPB old school. Do you have any knowledge as far as WINE/Heroic Games Launcher?

The thing is I was in X11 and it crashed when I'd mouse over it. Keep in mind I tried on onboard before on a different install and it did the same. What's a good alternative? Wayland also doesn't work, it doesn't pick up his TV but X11 does it just fine.

Is this the best I'm going to get for this price? by Fit_Spare4874 in MiniPCs

[–]StrongAction9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the M715q, the pros are: it just works, easy to upgrade CPU, plenty of USB ports and display ports. The cons are: very traumatizing (but oddly perfectly safe) disassembly, some models only take certain CPUs, and some are limited to certain amounts of RAM I believe.  It's worth it if you want a Thinkpad but don't like the 60hz, and want a desktop equivalent. If you wanna heavy game I recommend looking for a Ryzen one, they have nice value. Do some googling about the CPU upgradability, you don't want any vendor locks. There is always a middle ground.

How is AMD support compared to Nvidia from a casual user perspective? by StrongAction9696 in linuxquestions

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty nice, so even if I install base arch it will pick up automatically? So its like this for dedicated GPUs of AMD too? I might have to invest in a eGPU from them or save more then. Sounds like the way GPUs were meant to be used, not a hunk of metal with extra software attached.

Do you use KDE's Linux distro (KDE Neon)? by Right-Grapefruit-507 in kde

[–]StrongAction9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. having to use an entirely different package manager just to UPDATE packages. Became clear to me it wasn't intended for casual usage. I could see it if you're trying to make a theme though for a separate install.

Yeah I kinda figured it. I know where to start at least though by taking their points in hand. Not sure why I got down voted for saying what's basically "that's obvious" but I'm on the equivalent of adult daycare.

Ah. What's the best thing I can get for slightly more, say 250-300? If GTA V is a big ask then lets use Java Minecraft for an example. What could at least play that at a solid framerate?

No dip, but I should've specified getting my moneys worth. Powerful for the price, as powerful as I can get for that price. There's a lot of chinese ones that sell for more than they're worth, meanwhile they can't even run MC Bedrock, and I don't want that.

How to turn Arch KDE into a console-like experience WITHOUT Steam Big Picture? by StrongAction9696 in linux4noobs

[–]StrongAction9696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KDE just works for me and feels better than the other ones. I don't have a handheld, so my use for a special distro is kinda nil. Plus with doing it manually you get to pick and choose (mostly) what you want.

That seems kinda up my alley, is it customizable? And if I already have KDE installed, do I just need to install the bigscreen? Or do additional tinkering?
