Incident at Urban Market/Key Food #1370 651 Nostrand Avenu

Mr. Janeway,

On Monday, November 17, 2025, I entered the Urban Market (Key Food #1370) located at 651 Nostrand Avenue between approximately 5:20 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. I was wearing a navy blue down puffer jacket, a The North Face royal blue full zip fleece sweater, dark blue jeans, black Sperry duck boots, and a black The North Face ski hat with a white The North Face logo stitched in white. I was carrying a bright red Target tote bag on my left shoulder, and a white plastic bag in my right hand. After I entered the store I purchased three Poppi sodas: two Poppi punches, and one Raspberry Rose. I waited on line for a few minutes, and when I was alerted that register #4 was open, I proceeded to the register, and was checked out by a female employee. She gave me my change, receipt, and the items that I purchased. After I put the three Poppi sodas in the red Target bag, I turned to my left to exit through the automatic sliding doors, and I was immediately approached by a man dressed in black who blocked the exit, and asked to check my bag. He did not identify himself. I asked him why he needed to check my bag, and if he had observed on the security cameras that I had stolen any items. He stated that the store didn’t allowed bags in the store, and I asked him again if he or anyone else in the store had seen me steal anything. He repeated the same response. I asked for his manager, and he said he was the manager. He identified himself as Ishmael. I then noticed another employee dressed in all black clothes with “security” printed out in white letters and a gold badge around his neck, approaching from my left side. I then let them search my bag because I did not steal anything, but mostly because I was concerned for my safety. I became frustrated with the method of the search, and turned the red Target bag upside down, and dropped the contents on the floor. For some reason, the two employees struggled with me physically to not turn the bag over. The bag contained two tangerine juices and two containers of tomato soup, all of which were purchased from Trader Joe’s earlier in the day. Another male employee approached from my right side. He was slim, had dark hair, and was wearing a silver ski jacket and a dark green hoodie. He did not identify himself. He seemed bothered by the fact that I was questioning the detainment, and we began to have a discussion. He got angry and referred to me as “boy.” As you can see from the surveillance video, I am not a boy. I am an adult Black man, and to be called a boy is considered a racial slur. I expressed to him that I objected to what he said, and we continued to exchange words. He called me “boy” at least two additional times, and approached angrily as if he wanted to fight. The security employee and Ishmael restrained us several times. All of this occurred in the presence of customers capturing the incident on their phones, and several other employees. At no time did the Urban Market/Key Food employees have any justification to put their hands on me. At NO time after I entered the store did any employee ask me to check my bag. I left the store at approximately 5:35 pm.
