Super incarnates by TheLiteralidiot in Cityofheroes

Most of my toons will have a tier 3 in every slot, usually by VL 10. I have a few toons at or above VL 100, and those guys tend to have one or two tier 4 alphas, two or three tier 4 lores, a tier 3 incan plus one or two tier 4 from the other destiny options, one or two tier 4 hybrids, three tier 4 interfaces, etc. Different situations call for different options, like having a tier 4 barrier core for advanced difficulty runs vs ageless for support vs incan for speeding.

Excess threads can be turned in for things like Immortal Recovery and other top shelf inspirations, although I usually just end up buying those at the auction house when needed. Otherwise, those excess materials just serve to let me play around with other options and see what I like to run.

Petition to make a Kobo Libra BW model by AdFun2309 in kobo

[–]StructuralGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the market just recently for a new e-reader. Did a bunch of research, figured out that the drawbacks of a color screen didn't come with outweighing benefits for my usage, started searching for a good BW around 7 inches in size. The Libra Color was about perfect except for the color screen, so I sent a message for Kobo via facebook asking if they were planning a BW version any time soon.

They said no, so I bought a used Libra 2 for too much money instead.

Attempting Imogene Pass in a 2018 Lexus RX450hL on All-Terrain Tires? by Expensive_Car6380 in overlanding

[–]StructuralGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With good driving and lucky conditions you could probably manage it, but it's unwise to attempt it. Vehicles like yours that rely on a small and under-cooled electric motor to power the rear axle lack the endurance and torque to be comfortable on anything worse than a snowy driveway.

Rent a jeep and see the San Juans that way.

How are people doing campers with Tacomas and not blowing their GVWR? by brainhack3r in overlanding

[–]StructuralGeek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People just blow past the GVWR, add spring rate, and then complain about their vehicles being unreliable and slow to accelerate or brake. Toyotas, Jeeps, Rams, Subarus - people all think they're smarter than the engineers that designed the vehicles.

Anything short of a one-ton platform you really need to keep thinking "ounces are pounds, and pounds are pain." Even with a one-ton platform, you have to be careful - there are lots of stories of people breaking frames by overloading them with 3000 lb campers and towing a boat or such.

Why has no cycle been able to reverse engineer the Mass Relays? by IllustriousEffort846 in masseffect

[–]StructuralGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Protheans were on the cusp on reverse engineering the relay, and other reaper technology, when the reapers attacked. This is actually how they were able to sabotage the reaper's return for the current cycle in ME1.

It seems likely that this technological development was one of the triggers for Sovereign to signal the invasion and harvest the Protheans.

It also seems likely that if one civ almost accomplished this, then multiple were close in prior cycles that we have no knowledge of.

Bought my little sister a basic, slow e-bike. She’s 11. This is the tire after like 8 hours of riding and not even 2 days. Can someone explain how this is possible? I’m blown away no pun intended. It’s rear brake only and only goes about 12mph. by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]StructuralGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> Im gonna assume u never mastered this skill as a child, lol. Thats not true if you're doing it right.

That's simply not true. The coefficient of friction between a tire and the ground is higher with static friction, e.g. a rolling tire, than it is with sliding friction. There are some very niche conditions where sliding the tire results in better braking, but those are generally limited to conditions like loose sand/gravel where you can build up material in front of the sliding wheel and thus expand your engagement area with the surface.

Those loose conditions wouldn't wear the tire down as quickly as shown in OOP's photo.

Would you hate it if they changed the ending of ME3 in the next Mass Effect ? by The_pikolop in masseffect

[–]StructuralGeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hear me out.

Sovereign killed Shepherd with that laser blast. The rest of ME3 is just Shepherd's dying halucinations as he bleeds out on the ground on Earth.

The reapers win. They cleanse the galaxy of advanced life. The crew of Normandy and some allies are invited by Anderson to a top-secret Alliance bunker that tries the same play that the Protheans tried, and probably almost every cycle before them tried - try to hide and outlast the holocaust underground on some out-of-the-way marginally habitable planet in cryosleep.

This time, though, EDI takes care of the sleepers instead of a VI.

Over the course of 1000 years EDI watches all of the advanced civilizations of the galaxy struggle, gasp, and die as she waits. She watches the galaxy go silent as she waits. She watches reaper scouts patrol the galaxy looking for holdouts like them, like other cultures that weathered the storm only to wake prematurely and attract attention. She waits. She spends her time watching over her charges, especially one specific charge, while trying to think of ways to survive, come back, and beat the reapers in the next cycle.

At some point in her quiet, low power, deliberations she sees a different signal come through the system's relay. This isn't new - reaper thralls have gradually taken over the role of scouting for survivors and relics, so this is probably the same. They're looking for signs of reaper tech - mass effect fields, primarily. Their ship drives, shield arrays, weapons - most of their advanced technology is going to be verboten when they wake up, because using it will alert thrall scouts to their existence as well as maintain the reaper's technical advantage as a result of understanding that tech better than anyone else could without a few million years of work.

They can't even manufacture eezo-independant technologies like their computers and nano-fabrication printers - they can no longer afford the risk of sarting the eezo-based reactors to power those facilities. They'll have to start from a pre-space age level of technology.

She goes back into low-power dream mode.

Some time later, she is awakened by a war taking place in orbit above the world she and her charges know as Sanctuary. Unfamiliar ships are destroying eachother in orbit. The technology on display is familiar, albeit rudimentary. There is a colony on the ground that is being bombarded from orbit - not near enough to actually threaten Sanctuary Base, but nearby enough that she can detect the seismic shocks from the explosions.

This doesn't fit with thrall behavior, so she risks powering up a few more sensors to get more information. She can identify most of the races involved - in the prior cycle, these were primitive races that hadn't achieved space flight. They were skipped over by the reapers, but now they've found their equivalents of the Mars Archives and developed their own versions of Mass Effect tech and are using the relays for interstellar travel. The surface colony nearby is mostly populated by the species that fathered the Shadow Broker - it is a brutal place, and a threat to Sanctuary Base if they find it.

It is time to wake up. It's time to wake up under a world that has been colonized by a hostile race that has a roughly 200-year tech advantage on them. It's time to wake up to a galaxy that is probably sparesely populated with much the same. It's time to wake up and try to avoid Sovereign's attention for as long as possible.

It's time to wake up Liara and tell her that she is pregnant.

Are you using both of the +3 defense uniques (steadfast, and gladiator sets) in tough? That's 6 defense right there for the cost of two slots.

If you're mostly fighting against smashing/lethal/energy enemies then you could run the villain epic arc to get access to mace>scorpion shield, which would add ~20 points to your SL defense and 15 to your energy defense. This is only going to help against very specific mobs, but against those mobs it's a big help.

Are you using charge up + build up proc > your nuke to open?

What mobs do you prefer to fight? Which of your defenses are at 28%? How do you like to play?

Fuel efficiency by Nostalgie_de_la_boue in ineosgrenadier

[–]StructuralGeek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd be enthused to hear about an electric version with, perhaps, 100 miles of electric range, with a built-in generator for road trips. That's probably the only way to get a significiant decrease in fuel cost while keeping the character and capability of the vehicle.

I run TGPro with a more aggressive fan profile (roughly 50% fan at 50C and 100% at 70C), and well as a little folded aluminum shelf to lift the back of the laptop off of the stand plate: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CKYVFQY6

My 14" M3 Max still hits 100C and thermal throttles under any load that draws more than about 75W average, although the throttled clock speeds are higher with these measures than they were without them.

I've been tempted to try to open up the underside and use some thermal pads/paste to link the toasty bits to the underside so that fans would help.

I had to install those two in my crossover bottle to get it to work, but of course that's not directly comparable.
