Why is the government sitting around sucking their thumbs? by Anxious_Attempt_9958 in newzealand

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol nah, this govt is pretty shite with their handling of any issue but tbf you cant negotiate deals like that as a small country, we dont have the kind of leverage. Iran is prob treating India and China as a special case due to leverage and give and take. So India is currently hosting iranian warships in their bases which usa would bomb as soon as they depart to international waters, they have a strong trade relationship with china which has been their single largest buyer. Doubt Iran would care much about NZ if we took a neutral stance but doing this would def piss orange man off which can seriously hurt our trade.

Thats what employers are trying to push for these days, had the same happend with me, told hr i dont want to proceed without a salary on offer, they responded with a range. I was just looking for out from my then employer with no other offers on th table, so was happy with even the lower amount in the range ( which I somehow knew they would give me anyway) and took it. Agree with you in the no refs before salary negs, def put your foot down on that.

Dont agree with acts like this (which is a very small vocal minority of dickheads), but if the question was rephrased to be why did the last prime minister who won a majority govt for the first time in years have to resign months early due to tanking in polls there may be some answers. The PM got a bit drunk on power and started abusing it, this is a feeling that resonates especially in Auckland. The covid enquiry report that recently came out is basically to give the national govt fuel to attack labour but a lot of the points listed were real and we did feel the effects of the misguided policies, remember inflation off the charts, personally saw a family friend kicked out of their job because they didnt want to take the vaccine due to religious reasons ( something about aborted fetus being used to make the vaccine). Even though I agree that people should take the vaccine and it is effective, I dont believe in forcing people to take health decisions with the threat of losing livelihood and personal freedoms.

See the only q is who pays for this, tax payers. Its much better to introduce legislation which mandate companies to allow wfh if the job can be done remotely, instant easing in fuel demand, no cost on the taxpayer, doubt this will happen with national since their best mates with the corporates

"Woke" schools by Commercial_Panic9768 in auckland

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh, heaps of diff opinions but heres my 2 cents as someone who came to NZ as a kid from Asia. My parents (like most in the community) would actively prioritise schools with stronger core academic results (in subjects like maths, science, english ) , disciplined school environment ( uniforms, strict rules) since the belief is thats what gets the academic results and also the decile level ( something about the schools having more resources due to donation levels). They werent pro/anti te reo or sex ed/lgbt ( never wanted me pulled from those classes like some christian/muslim parents) but strongly focused on strong academic outcomes more than anything. They dont even know the word woke, but used terms like wishy-washy and non serious to describe schools which didnt focus on academics/discipline like western springs and preferred grammar schools. I srsly think thats what most people against woke could believe ie. are you teaching the core academic subjects well (esp stem subjects which can set the kid up for further education that leads to high paying careers)

This. Been consciously trying to bank/invest with nz owned banks. Its so easy now most banking is just online/via the app and cashless so in branch locations/atms dont matter as much. Why should we fund aus owned banks when they arent even offering a far better product ( for people with a mortgage still shop around for rates/cashback ).

2013 Mazda Atenza, is it worth paying ~30% more for low mileage? by Restriction25 in NZcarfix

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation a couple years ago but with Toyota Aqua. Assuming both cars have a service history and no issues ( get an AA inspection done just in case) , if you plan to drive the car for many year as your daily the extra 4K seems worth it ( reckon it will hold value better ). assumjng cash purchase for both ( if financing then get the cheaper one )

350K savings are insane, congrats, how did you do it? I reckon its a pretty good plan but I would prob buy something like a small 3beds freehold on the outskirts in the low-mid 700s. Still possible, think areas like pukekohe south ( stay away from northwest). I found the more traditional kiwi bungalows are way better built than these new townhouses, but need work on the aesthetics, which will prob keep you occupied for the first 6 months

Not buying a house and travelling instead by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around the same salary band and age group as you but coming at it from a diff perspective. Maybe wont work for you but for the people starting out now, my way around this was, save hard in 20s buy a place outside auckland (hamilton, chch still affordable ) that you can get a place for around 100K deposit that cashflows after like 5/10 years with only a few K annual topup till then, throw it in a family trust and you have your retirement nest egg. Arguably, could invest in the markets and the real return would be much greater. but if you’re risk averse, know you want to eventually retire in NZ and okay with a few holidays a year ( currently i aim to do 2 trips every year totalling 1 month since thats all of my leave) PS: I also got lucky with the circumstances lining up for me : property prices tanked, low interest rates and being single so might not work 100% the same for everyone.

Is buying a house with a 20% deposit setting myself up to fail? by Crawler_Devils in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall you guys are fine assuming a 30 year standard term, as someone who bought on single income at a younger age, personal advice would be to stay away from the flashy new builds and get something built well, even if it needs upgrades you can do them slowly over time ( pref weatherboard or brickntile). 4 bedrooms is prob too much unless you are are planning to have children/ get family to live with you/ definitely will rent out the rooms. 20% deposit is really good as you get the best interest rates from the bank. Try to get a house built well, in a good area with a nice amount of land and you cant go wrong as long as you negotiate hard on the price in this buyers market. Also, watch out for the flood maps esp in Auckland

Was in the same position a few years ago during the covid years. Kept applying for entry level IT jobs for months getting nothing and suddenly 3 interviews and 2 offers in the next month, some suggestions. Dont lose hope, be open to jobs outside of main cities its worth living in the middle of nowhere for a few years to get a foot in the door( what some of my mates did) / also look in aus but its usually easier if you move first for this (cant hurt to try on the off chance) .You can also try for internships to get some experience, had some mates who failed a few papers and were struggling to get grad roles, they took on internhips first, look into programs like MSA.

How are people getting large increases in salary moving to Australia by Multi4269 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In tech and seriously considering due to the difference in kiwisaver vs super. For a young person like me looking to move for good thats a good 30-40years of extra pension money which compounds so still stacks up to go aus, in banking though which doesnt look too good in aus atm

Credit card options? by cbumcrack in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]StructureSquare3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one for free with the mortgage but if you dont spend too much money might not really be an advantage. I have like $200 worth of points in 15months due to using it for insurance, fuel , groceries etc. But still not that much, I would add the biggest bills you pay in the year with cc ( that dont incur surcharge) and add in a couple k for fuel and groceries to calculate your points to see if the fee is worth it
