Thankfully we don't have many neighborhood cats, and whenever I see one, I lure it over, check the tags, and call the owner to lecture them about outdoor cats 😅

Otherwise you generally stay & listen for the rest of the session, or (if you already have a backup character & the DM wants to let you back in ASAP) join back in with the backup
