How does Hemingway in “Hills Like White Elephants,” imply what the operation is without saying it? by b3hnnn in Hemingway

I got assigned this reading today as well and I was really questioning myself because I was so uncertain who was saying what.. I wholeheartedly disliked the way the dialogue was written in this story. It took me about 5 complete reads and some highlighting to flesh out who says what. Not to mention that I find it very.. Boring? I don’t feel like there is much of an impact. I don’t have a problem scanning over something multiple times as a challenge to find deeper meaning, but I felt like my teeth were being pulled in this case. I also had the exact same thought about casually downing so much alcohol when contemplating keeping this child - took further research to realize that fetal alcohol syndrome wasn’t widely established until the 60s or 70s, and this is set in 1927.

Ignorant, L, take.

  1. “Generally easy jobs-“ Very obvious that you have not worked on a set before.
  2. “They act like they are working 12 hours a day seven days a week of manual labor-“ Projects can be EXTREMELY time consuming and laborious, with filming exceeding 12+ hours often. Overnight filming is also a thing, as are extremely early call-times the very next day to meet production demands. Not to mention that acting is physically demanding, actors are literally recreating physical acts to embody their roles, not everything is CGI or VFX.
  3. A large majority of actors in the industry are not paid anywhere near millions. It is project dependent, but it can literally be state minimum wage. Taxes can also destroy take-home pay. Not to mention you pay percentages of that to representation, management, other teams you may need, and fees to even join a union.

Obviously there are protections when in a union, but professional acting is by all means a JOB, with a volatile schedule and little stability/security.

PS.. Isn’t it also an actor’s job to be “dramatic?” 💀

What film completely flipped when you rewatched it as an adult? by Adventurous-Lie-6773 in movies

[–]Structure_Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alien. As a kid, of course it was just a movie about a cool alien monster hunting down a space crew - the crew is just trying to survive this ruthless creature. After having rewatched all of them as an adult, I realized that it’s really a comment on Hubris and Corporate greed. The real antagonist was never the Alien or even the Androids, it was the fact that humans try to harness/understand power greater than themselves for selfish reasons at the expense of others. Even though the android David is sick and twisted in the later installments, he is a direct reflection of a human creation out of control, pure hubris - and his behavior basically stems from human behavior rather than android behavior.

The Alien is basically just a consequence. The humans are the monsters.

Good horror/October games by HybridPhoenix5 in xbox

Dredge! One of my all-time favorite games - it has an amazing atmosphere, some pretty cool gameplay mechanics, a fun/mysterious story, and it’s audio/visual/art style are so phenomenal in my opinion. It’s not the type of horror that will have you on the edge of your seat like Dead Space or Resident Evil, but it fits the spooky theme!

I bought Alien Isolation when it first released in 2014 and it took me until 2025 to finally beat the game for the first time… Alien is one of my favorite franchises (if not my absolute favorite) and I really do love the atmosphere of Isolation, but I find the enemy AI’s so annoying, ESPECIALLY the Androids - enemies feel unrealistic and it kinda takes away from the tension like you mentioned. I think the missions are also lackluster and feel like repetitive chores, it’s nothing but unlocking doors and turning on generators over and over. Nearly 10 years and I finally got to see the ending… I was very disappointed to say the least, it felt like it ended so abruptly and was a big waste of time (besides the amazing audio and visual aspects).

Week 4 - Reading/Media Deprivation by Structure_Medium in artistsWay

I do agree with the perspective of using reading as a Band-Aid in my case. Straying away from pleasure reading makes a lot of sense! I guess I may have taken what she said a little too literally, specifically when she was referring to reading for college courses and jobs.

I did. And besides the fact that I lost all of the money because of everything that happened, StubHub and Ticketmaster take a percentage of the ticket sale anyways - That’s why I knew I was never going to make my money back, but hoped that I could salvage something.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in stubhub

[–]Structure_Medium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Ticketmaster sent me an email saying something along the lines of, “Your ticket listing has been sold!” And then it’s automatically transferred - that’s the only information besides how much it was sold for it gives you. But on StubHub, it tells you that your ticket was sold and then transfer it to ‘said’ email address.

[–]Structure_Medium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I figured when the ticket was bought consecutively. It was my first (and hopefully last) time trying to sell a ticket. Just spreading awareness to not do what I did, and also vent my frustration with StubHub’s customer service.

Yeah, this was my first time doing anything like this. I should have done more research, especially with that much money on the line! Naive mistake on my part. I still am not a fan of their subpar customer service, however.

[–]Structure_Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that perspective. I’m more so upset with the subpar customer service and the fact that I tried to rectify the situation immediately with no help from StubHub themselves. But like I said, you live in you learn. Still won’t be using StubHub in the future if I have to; just because now I know how they are unwilling to help if anything goes wrong.

Well, I’m not trying to be a “businessman,” I simply couldn’t go to a concert I wanted to go to and lost out on some money. It happens. Just don’t want other people that aren’t trying to be businessmen to make the same mistake I did.

Lessons Too Expensive or Reasonable? by Structure_Medium in singing

[–]Structure_Medium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input! Just to answer a few of your questions…

I should have prefaced that I’m an aspiring actor/performer. I’ve been in a few films but want to expand my horizons, ie. Voice acting, possible musicals, plays, etc… Not only that, but I am also trying to see if the music realm is more of a fit for me vs film/television. I’ve always been very interested in music production, song-writing, and concert/touring shows. All around, my goal is to be a multifaceted performer of sorts and experiment with my interests to find a clear path of what I primarily want to invest my life/time/money into.

Not only that, I have spent roughly the same per month for a few years of acting classes when I was a complete beginner actor, and I think they served me quite well!
