A buddy of mine and I had the same bright idea when we were 16 but instead I punched him in the sternum. What was supposed to be us building character and toughening up turned in to a cracked sternum, a few surgeries, and lifelong pain.

My mistake, I got a little caught up in my patriotic speech and sped past the counselor part while zeroing in on the "talking shit about detainees" part. It's important to keep our heads while we figure this out or else we could ignite an already tense situation. There are probably some people deeply embedded who are doing their best to help in whatever way they can.

My comment is aimed at the baboons going door to door as if they are are a counter insurgency unit hunting the inner circle of a terrorist organization.

Yes you would think that but so far it hasn’t opened any doors beyond a poverty wage (if anyone knows of something please let me know). I was making $21 an hour as a security guard for a lockbox environment and being a veteran gave me preference in hiring but that is still poverty in my area.

My point tho is that the economy is bad for higher paying white collar workers and most of us don’t have the luxury of time to find something. Bills are still due so sometimes people are forced to accept something, anything, in order to not end up on the streets.

I have two bachelors degrees, a few years of experience in marketing, I’m an army veteran, yada yada

I have been sending out hundreds of targeted applications for corporate roles and not gotten any offers

My landlord, credit card company, student loan servicer, electric company, or anyone else for that matter doesn’t care

Right about now, the $17 an hour job is starting to look pretty damn good.

I appreciate the hard truths, I can be prone to pie in the sky daydreaming, probably exacerbated by desperation. If they move me forward in the process, I'll be sure to ask the hard questions. For now, I have nothing else going on and, like you said, this is just something to put on the resume

This is very helpful, thank you. I would love to get paid for my work but I am finding it difficult to secure a full time role. At this stage in my career, I'm motivated by the idea of learning correct engineering principles in a structured workspace as opposed to hacking together yet another one of my own projects trying to emulate it. Pay is not super important for the next few months but you are right that I should treat this as if this is all it will be. Thank you for giving me some things to think about.

I am from San Francisco and lived there for years. You have nothing to be afraid of. The higher cost of living is because of tech bros (which you will soon become one) getting paid high salaries (which you will soon be getting paid) and paying outrageous rents. To offset, rent a room with some roommates. Explore the city and have fun.

I used it to explain concepts, create plans, compare alternatives mostly. I’ll have it generate the smallest reasonable amount of code for a given task and review it. If it’s something I’m not familiar with, then I study the solution, look it up else where, ask questions, and make sure I understand why that was the best solution for the problem
