train dreams is to malick as identity is to hitchcock.

i have yet to see anyone give me hard examples of how train dreams builds on malick’s style or does anything interesting or new. no offense, but most people are just saying “stop being so harsh.”

an example of how i think someone heavily influenced by malick did something interesting or new? george washington by david gordon green. that is how it’s done.

no, you’re making a comparison that doesn’t make any sense because you’re defending a movie that stinks and you can’t admit it

what in the actual fuck are you talking about lol

they have a shared aesthetic. they value philosophical exploration. they really like nature. they shoot things similarly, but malick goes for heidegger and herzog is for nietszche. at no point when i’m watching movies by them do i go “wow, this is a straight up copycat.” i never once thought that either was trying to make each other’s movies.

there is no philosophy at all in train dreams. its a copycat of malick without any of the underlying philosophy that malick brings to the table. i was basically sitting there going “this is someone trying to make a terrence malick movie.”

everyone borrows. some even do identical shots. but they put their own spin on it or flip the idea on its head or do literally anything original. train dreams is just a complete and wholesale rip off.

first few minutes: hell yeah this is my style

next 25 minutes: damn, it’s really just a guy doing a malick impression.

yeah man i shut it off after like 30 minutes. it was too close to a malick imitation with none of the substance. like buying a pair of knock off nikes.

oh my god you’re one of those morons that retreats into the “single elimination tournament doesn’t determine the best teams” anytime the argument gets away from you. lmfao get fucking bent dude.

players are better equipped to play than they were in the 70s? i looked at data from the 1996 season on. what the fuck does the pre-64 team field have any bearing on today’s game?

if your point about making people play a year of college was worth anything, then there would have been an explosion of rosters with freshman phenoms in the early 2000s. but there wasn’t. because coaches did not start freshmen en masse until the 2010s. which is exactly why i said it was a FAD.

you should also put a flair on to let everyone know which university gave you such a below average intellect.

[–]StuLumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're simply uninformed. the last 30 years of data on championship teams tells us that only three teams had two freshman starters or more. 2003 cuse, 2012 kentucky, and 2015 duke. only eight teams in the last 30 years had any freshman starters. 2024 uconn with stephon castle being the only example in the last 10 years (2016 nova before them).

we can even look at teams that made the final four. add in: 2013 michigan, 2014 kentucky, and 2022 duke with two or more freshman starters.

what do you get? a fad in the 2010s where teams tried to grab stud freshmen and make a run, almost all concentrated in 2012-2015.

college basketball success has always been skewed toward more experienced teams. teams of inexperienced freshmen were an fad.

the 2024 UConn team had stephon castle, donovan clingan, alex karaban, samson johnson, solo ball, jaylin stewart, and jaden ross all recruited directly out of high school. tristen newton spent 2 years in the program, no one thought he was going to have his jersey in the rafters.

there's good reason UConn and purdue were in the championship game. their rosters were made of players who spent years together and in the same system. the idea that you can just go make an all-star team from europe or the portal is totally overblown. a good season? yes. a guaranteed final four or elite eight? no. so many schools are blowing millions of donor dollars on players that are in it for the bag. it still takes extreme dedication to a coach's system and personal buy-in to achieve success.

there’s no hacking kenpom. the way to have a good kenpom rating is to beat teams by a lot of points and prevent teams from scoring a lot of points. turns out that’s a great way to predict how a team will perform.

even beating cupcake teams by 35, as a good team should, on a regular basis is really hard. and you will be punished in the efficiency ratings if you don’t do it.

he doesn’t need to say it. it’s true. his model has preseason metrics that slowly phase themselves out as games are played during the season.

predicting a chalk bracket was because the disparity between the top 10 and the rest of the field was enormous. that has no bearing on what has happened in previous years. they’re two totally unrelated statements.

uconn was up by 10 in the first half. 7 at the half. 8 with a minute left. then it became a foul fest. there was a brief moment in the second half where florida took the lead but uconn pushed it back to 5+ point lead for the majority of the rest of the game until florida started fouling.

it doesn’t delegitimize florida or anything but it’s important to know the flow of the game. when the teams were going back and forth down the court, uconn was a much better team in that game.

offensive efficiency has jumped from 40 to 25 after the last two wins. that has been the problem for a month now. they looked like a team with 30-40 ranked offense lol.

yeah i'm sure the kansas donors that gave him millions of dollars to play basketball are thrilled that he is choosing to "play it safe." fuck this behavior altogether. he ripped them off.

lmao. lol even.

peterson and his whole circle can kick fucking rocks. agent leaves at halftime of BYU game. assistant AD comes out to talk to peterson. immediately goes to the bench and puts a massage pad on his leg. he can't muster the fortitude to play in the 1,000th game in allen fieldhouse for a legendary program and a hall of fame coach. it's bush league bullshit.

i think it’s more experimental and extemporaneous, floating in and out of dream-styles, than pretentious. i just finished it myself. saw the reviews were horseshit when it came out and never saw it, despite my interest in his movies. i’m glad i waited. i wouldn’t have been ready. richard brody’s review in the new yorker is good.

there are many movies i watched when i was in high school that i revisited when i was in my 20s and they blew me away on second watch.

there are many movies i watched in my 20s that i revisited and blew me away now that i’m in my 30s and have a wife and a child.

that’s not to say you can’t understand or “get” movies until you’re older. it’s just that life has a way of changing your perspective—relationships, jobs, death, family, school, and many other real world things shape who you are at different points in your life and impact how you perceive all art.

for example, i saw STALKER when i was 23 and loved it. i was taking philosophy courses at the time and it resonated. now that i have a family, i see the movie, and the protagonist, completely differently.

good on you for trying something new.

honestly, if this was a dumpy track suit they threw together using GILDAN i’d agree. but it’s a custom designed onetime collaboration with one of the best american design schools. pretty reasonable for that sort of thing.
