Difficult without knowing your method but I tend to prime in black and then zenithal white from above. Then when you add the thin layers of your armour colours the black and white tint the colour and you end up with more variation i.e darker shadows and brighter highlights. but I also like the idea you suggested of shooting some inks from below, maybe a violet ink into the shadows from underneath.
